Career Advice

The modern time is very challenging, giving a lot of depression and failures to the jobseekers in most sectors of job. A good career advice can help these candidates make their career dazzling with number of job opportunities. Although, career and job and are two different things, but the former basically involves painstaking diligence while the latter one is all about being zealous for the responsibility you need to undertake for the granted job position. It is that special boulevard where you find good opportunities to prove yourself as an important asset by demonstrating your key skills and utmost diligence. Yet, if you are stuck about which career stream to pursue, seeking a career advice from a professional consultant is a brilliant step to determine your goals that will lead you to the path of success.

For a beginner, to pursue a viable career can be somewhat challenging, as their knowledge about this is either void or negligible. Yet the issue can be resolved readily if you come over to the point what hobbies or interests were of immense liking to you. And once employing them in your career hub, you can seriously start making money. Those avocations that have now turned into your profession are honestly the first springboard in providing you guaranteed success.

Being a beginner, you may not have that special skills or knowledge required to expand your potential plans and without these elements, finding a relevant job is seemingly possible. Therefore, the second important career advice portrays to go back to the past while you were in school or you can undergo some specific training that can hone your ability and skills. To be precise, you need to determine an institution where you can earn a degree/diploma/license of the stream of your best liking. This will encourage you to keep to your studies.

Ultimately, when you get a desired job, be sure to negotiate your salary. This will help catering your most needs; thereby, leading you to sustain a standard lifestyle. Then, strongly analyse the high, average and low income for your career so that you can clearly know what salary will suit to your skills and experience. If you have strong skills, there are maximum chances the salary will be decided in your accordance. But remember, while negotiating your salary, don’t be overconfident about yourself. Being patient and meek in your attitude, you can start earning money which you truly deserve and desire.

How To Transform Your Career, Claim your Power and Get Unstuck in Today’s Turbulent Market Place

A career development centre can be a service, or a group of programs that provides people with any level of education, whether they are undergraduate, a graduate, or an alumni, to plan for or deal with career transitions that inevitably arise in the life of any person. Each career development centre will have a career counsellor even though the centres may operate differently. All career counsellors provide guidance through personal interaction.

We spend nearly 100,000 hours in our lifetime working. Wouldn’t life be different if you loved your work, rather than dreading Monday mornings? How could life be different if you felt energized in your current job or your next career move, so energized that work did not feel like work anymore?

Whether you are currently working or in transition looking for your next job opportunity you do not want to miss this special briefing – a briefing that will change the way you approach work forever.

If today’s turbulent job market is creating roadblocks for you that you cannot seem to overcome no matter how hard you try, you’ve done everything and still can’t find the job or career you want, or you are concerned that the next job you take you will just result in another layoff before you know it, then you MUST plan to attend next week’s invitation-only event!

In this exclusive briefing on Tuesday, June 28th, 2009 at 7pm, we will share with you some critical insights into:

* How you can identify your true work passion
* How and why you must consider yourself self employed and manage your career that way even if you work for someone else
* How you can overcome the challenges created by the recent economy and still capture top dollar for your talents
* How living your passion will significantly increase your sense of financial freedom
* Why you cannot afford to wait and must start taking action now due to the changing landscape of the workforce
* The art of the job search has changed – how you can uncover the majority of the new opportunities that are never advertised anywhere
* The power of your personal brand and its impact on your career success
* How to not let fear stop you, replacing it with a mentality of limitless possibilities.
* And More…..

The fact that you are reading this, means you are ready for a change. 90% of Americans are trapped in unfulfilling careers, find out how the other 10% are living the art of bringing work to life.
Question by : Career????
I’m 20 years old and I don’t know what I want to do with my life. Right now, I’m a nanny and I LOVE it. I love feeling like I’m making a difference in a person’s life but I’m living paycheck to paycheck with no extra money at all. I’m getting married in three months and my fiance has a really good paying job but, I don’t want to be a bum wife that depends on her man to take care of her, you know?

I change my mind on a daily basis… One day I want to be a [starving] photographer and then the next I think being a nurse would be kind of cool. The next day, I’m thinking about being a social worker.

Are there any websites that can help a person decide what type of career would be good for them based on their interests?

Finding Your Career Fit

Have you ever had a job that just wasn’t a fit? I sure have, and I was miserable. Even when I really liked the work, there were some days I barely had the energy to get up and go to the office. I wasn’t happy to be there. I didn’t feel like my work was making a big impact. I lost my enthusiasm and creativity. At the end of the day, I was so drained. Then, I’d go to bed and get up to do it all over again. I felt like a hamster on a wheel and dreamed of escaping, but I felt stuck. Maybe you’re in that job now and you’re miserable.

So, what do you do when you feel stuck and miserable in your career?

Figure out what isn’t working. Usually, there is one aspect of the job that isn’t working for you. It could be that the work you’re doing isn’t interesting, you’re in the wrong role, or you’re in the wrong environment.

When the work isn’t interesting, and you’re struggling to keep up
Sometimes, the work you’re doing just isn’t interesting anymore. I see this a lot when people get stuck using skills they’re good at but don’t enjoy using. For example, I’ve had highly creative clients, who are also organized, get stuck in project management roles. In those roles, they have to focus on details and information. But, what excites them is coming up with new ideas for products or programs and handing the details over to someone else. Working against your interests is a stressful place to be, often leading to burnout. Before long, your enthusiasm and engagement in the job will go away. That will lead to poor performance and ultimately, you could get fired.

When you’re in the wrong role, and you’re heading in the wrong direction
Your career could also be heading in the wrong direction. When someone performs well, there is always the pressure of seeking out advancement. But, not everyone wants that level of responsibility. When you advance up the management ranks you become removed from the work you enjoyed to managing people doing the work you enjoyed. It’s a very different skill set that doesn’t come naturally to most people. At some point, you have to decide if you want to advance or not, or even if you want a traditional career path. For example, many people opt out of the traditional job progression in favor of portfolio careers or business ownership.

When you’re in the wrong environment, and you’re feeling out of place
This is a little harder to pinpoint, but it’s the cause for a lot of frustration at work. It has to do with a mismatch of values and personality. You might be an introvert who likes to get work done alone and in silence but are working in an environment where you’re expected to work on groups projects to get work done. Or, maybe you like to have a fun, open environment yet people are often working behind closed doors. Even harder is when you work in an environment where your cultural, religious or personal values are not valued and respected by your co-workers. All of those scenarios and many more often lead to misunderstandings.

If any of this describes your situation, it’s time to do something about it. Personally, after a series of bad jobs, I had the chance to go through a career assessment process. It was the best thing I could have done for me and my career. I already knew that I was a helper, and that was confirmed. I discovered that I need a lot of autonomy, independence, and challenge in my career. I wasn’t getting that in my previous jobs. I tuned in to my skills and found that many of them were not being used in meaningful ways. Much to my surprise, I also realized the profound importance of being in the right work environment. I always thought that I could do work I loved anywhere. I was wrong!

If you’re struggling now and want to know how to change your career situation, I suggest you also take some time to reflect on your current situation to figure out what’s out of sync. Go through a career assessment process so you can have a better understanding about how you want to use your skills, what role you want to have and the best environment for your personality. Career tools such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Skillscan, and StrengthsQuest provide good insight. Of course, there are tons of books out there, too. You can work through the process on your own, but I think it’s helpful to get guidance and support from a career counselor or coach. When I went through my career assessment process, I had a career counselor and mentor who helped me sort through the reports and come up with an action plan.

What I’ve come to learn through my bad job experiences is the importance of doing work that is fulfilling, in the right place in alignment with my career vision. While it’s not always easy, you have to stay true to your goals and dreams. For me, when I’m working within the right circumstances, I can make the biggest impact, and I’m happier, overall. That realization inspired me to write my career guide, Fast Track Your Career: Three Steps for Finding Work You Love and create my career transition programs. By sharing my experiences and the steps I’ve taken to stay on the right career track, I’ve been able to live my career vision.

Career Colleges of America-career Education and Medical Schools

As the economy suffers, many people are interested in finding a new career. Sometimes this is a personal choice, and sometimes, like in the case of people who have lost their jobs or have gotten laid off, it is a necessity. There are certain types of careers which become at risk when the economy takes a turn for the worse. A career in the medical field is not one of those risks. If anything, a career in the medical field can be expected to increase in demand overtime, regardless of our economic situation. That is because the medical needs of the population are not necessarily driven by the status of the economy. As the population grows the need for highly trained and qualified medical workers will rise.

The Healthcare Job Outlook for 2008/2009 describes new job growth from 2006 – 2016 as excellent with over 3 million new jobs added for the period. As well, the projected salary increase is 22% compared to just 11% for other industries combined.

The Department of Labor shows similar findings, projecting that medical assistant jobs are expected to increase over 35 percent over the next decade, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. The health care industry is expanding as our population grows and ages, and as technology advances, so will the need for highly trained health care workers such as a surgical assistant medical assistant, vocational nurse, computerized office assist, and so on.

A career in the medical field has been referred to as “recession-proof.” Few industries can boast this kind of employment outlook. If you’ve been laid off in another work field, this should not be a concern for you in considering starting training in a medical career. It is highly unusual for medical layoffs to occur.

And if you are considering a career in the medical field, even if you have no medical training, or even a GED, it is best to get started right away, in order to take advantage of this growing industry. Medical career college courses are available for every type of lifestyle. You will receive hands on training, job placement assistance, and in some cases even financial aid. The career choices are nearly unlimited, from vocational nursing programs, to diagnostic medical sonographer training, to pharmacy technician careers, and so much more. Take your first step towards that new career today!

Career Colleges of America is a Southern California college that offers a vocational nursing program, as well as programs in medical assisting, paralegal, computerized accounting and more!

Career Coaching: Seven Mistakes to Avoid When Making a Big Career Change

Are you considering a big change in your career? Do you feel let down, bored, burned out? Maybe you think there is something bigger and more meaningful that you are meant to do. Perhaps your company downsized you into this predicament. Regardless of the reason, there are some common mistakes to avoid while you evaluate and select new career options. Avoid these pitfalls and you can stay motivated, keep your balance and move forward successfully.

Mistake #1 – Making Decisions in Haste

Tempted to just quit and wing it? Everyone is now and then, but unless you just can’t stand your current situation another day, resist! Instead, write down everything you hate about your current situation, then one by one, look at the most intolerable issues and see how you can turn each around to make it more tolerable for the present moment.

It is easy to get so excited about the future that you decide to forge ahead without a plan and hope everything naturally falls your way after that. It will require more energy to sustain your new career and make it work well for you than it will to identify and start it. It is better to come from a place of higher energy and stability than to start out already burned out or worried about how you will pay the bills. Consider seeking the help of a qualified career coach, life coach or career counselor to help you identify your next career path. An objective, trained third party can help you strategize and phase it in for the best results and the least amount of heartache.

Mistake #2 – Ignoring the Finances

“I can’t stand this any longer! I would rather eat dog food than put up with this another day!” Whether you are pursuing a new career voluntarily or involuntarily, you must pay the bills. Do pursue your dream. Do look for the career that brings out the best in you. If you have plenty of savings, good for you! Resist the temptation to go through it and be left without. If you have a dream, by all means hang on to it! But if it won’t realistically get off the ground for three years, find another way to earn a living in the meantime. The need for income is a reality you cannot ignore.

Mistake #3 – Filling Your Head with Negative Stuff

What do you read? What do you view on television or the Internet? With whom do you spend free time? When you’re looking at making big life and career changes, you need lots of positive energy around you. If you spend time with negative people or fill your mind with anything that isn’t useful, guess what? It fills you with negative energy. Instead, surround yourself with people and things that give you positive energy and encouragement. Read books that motivate and encourage you. Go places that inspire you. Do everything you can to be what you want to be like after you land the next great career opportunity, and you will be more likely to attract it into your life!

Mistake #4 – Getting Bogged Down by Decisions

If you’re an intelligent person who has enjoyed any measure of success, chances are there are a lot of different choices you could make in your next big life or career change. Clients often tell me they are overwhelmed by all of the thoughts and ideas that keep running through their minds. And as the overwhelm sets in, it is very easy to just shut down. As we work together, I remind clients when making tough decisions to ask themselves, “Is this going to move me forward?” If the answer is yes, proceed. If the answer is no, either revise the decision or drop it entirely.

Mistake #5 – Not Having a Plan

There are two reasons this is important. First, life is unpredictable and it is dangerous to relinquish security before the next career arrangement is lined up. Second, changing careers is a lot like dating. You are always more desirable when you are unavailable. You are more attractive to a prospective employer if you are already working. And if you have already lost your job either voluntarily or involuntarily, it is even more important to have a plan so that you are then more likely to achieve it. If you see success, you will be successful. (Conversely, if you don’t have a plan, how will you know when you’ve succeeded?)

Mistake #6 – Ending your Preparation Too Soon

All I can say here is, prepare, prepare, prepare. If you’re looking at several possibilities, don’t immediately drop one when another looks good. Think about all of the big tests you have taken in life (college entrance exams, finals, certification exams) and how you prepared for those. Did you study way in advance and take a big, long break before taking the test? Or were you still reading the material as you walked in the door on test day, wondering if you could still be better prepared? When you’re embarking on a new career or life change, give it all of your available energy, skills and attention. If you have a goal in mind, resist relaxing when you think you almost have it. Prepare and stay sharp right up until the day you start. This will help keep you from losing confidence at the last minute.

Mistake #7 – Getting Discouraged Too Easily

Does this happen to you when you face hurdles in the midst of your goal? Instead of giving in to the pain, pay attention to what specifically is making you uncomfortable and make adjustments to get you through. For example, if you’re in career transition and you find that it is painful to go through the tedium of making phone calls, sending resumes, going on interviews where the competition is tough, etc., find the formula that gives you a break without stopping the process. Try devoting an hour or two each morning to these tasks and letting it go for the rest of the day, or only making a certain number of phone calls or interview appointments per week so that when you’re finished, you can feel good about giving yourself some time off. Don’t stop. Adjust.

Remember, a career change is a life change. You didn’t arrive at your current level of education and experience overnight, and don’t be disappointed if you don’t immediately uncover “the thing” you want to do next. Allow yourself time and space to explore and make an educated decision. Get the help you need along the way (i.e., career coach, career counselor) to help you do it strategically, not emotionally. If you avoid these mistakes you are much more likely to end up in a new career that complements and fulfills your life.

The Career Makeover: 7 Steps to Achieving Your Goals

Makeovers on television shows and in magazines are enticing for women the world over. Of course the reason they are so popular, is because the idea of getting a fresh start in life is a golden key we have all dreamt about at one time or another. No matter what their lives are like, everyone has something they wish could be different – their home, their body, their friends, and even their career.

Career makeovers are not a new concept and if you think about it, making over your career will automatically set a chain reaction in motion that will affect all aspects of your life, particularly those that are unsatisfactory. If you’ve ever changed jobs or industries, worked with a recruiter, drafted a new resume or pursued additional education to increase your job prospects or opportunities, you’ve already taken steps to improve or “make over” your career.

Here are some ideas which can take your career makeover to a whole new level!

1. Look inside yourself. How do you perceive yourself? Are you confident? Do you like yourself? Are you proud of your accomplishments? What is your attitude to life, on working, on the value that you bring to your job? How do you feel about your career? Do you feel in control of your future? Working on your “inner self” is of critical importance when it comes to creating a career makeover. If your internal thoughts are not consistent with the actions that you need to take, you’ll continually feel a sense of disconnect. Others will feel it too. All change starts on the inside. If you need support in this area, consider counseling or coaching, whichever is most appropriate for your situation. Until the inner issues are resolved or healed, it can be very challenging to take the necessary steps that lead to a fulfilling career.

2. Get balanced. A key component of effectively managing your career starts with managing your time efficiently. Do you keep your work life separate from your home life? Do you take work home in the evenings or weekends? Do you talk about work ALL THE TIME? Do you take time to recharge your batteries so that you feel refreshed? This is probably one of the most difficult areas when it comes to career makeovers. It takes a lot of courage to “draw the line” when it comes to balancing your life. Many women feel that if they don’t give everything to their job, then they won’t have a job, yet, the opposite is actually true. If you’re working for a company which does not allow you to set boundaries around your time, you WILL burn out. Before this happens it is probably best that you start looking for a new position. It’s a difficult choice to make, but ultimately it’s up to you to set boundaries around what types of treatment you will accept from others – including your employer. If you can’t achieve work/life balance in your current job, you will never be able to give it your best, simply because you will not be at your best which in turn will affect your future career prospects.

3. Get your relationships in check. They say birds of a feather flock together. Are your friends dragging you down? ( I was told my friends were holding me back by a naturopath when I was in my early 20’s I was VERY angry with him and protective of my friends – but a year later when I had taken a grip of my life and moved on, I realized he had been completely right!) Is your network of friends and associates supportive of you and your goals, or are they constantly telling you that your dreams are too lofty? Do they drag you into their gossip or do they inspire you with thoughtful conversation? In essence your ambition can be affected by the people around you and because of this your personal and professional relationships will have a tremendous influence on your career success. Therefore, to get your relationships in check, evaluate your friendships and acquaintances. It might be time to start gently letting go of some of the relationships that aren’t serving you, which will allow you to fill the empty spaces with new friends who will support you. Make sure you’re forging relationships with the people who see your value, and surround yourself with mentors who are helpful in assisting you to move forward.

4. Begin with a vision. Having an idea of where you want to go is one of the most important steps in your career makeover. Until you know where you want to be or what you want to have, it’s impossible to decide on the correct steps to get you there. How do you envision your ideal life? What type of job would make you happy? What brings you the most joy? What type of position would you like to see yourself working in 5 years time? Give yourself permission to think about what you really want, dare to dream a little. Remember what seems impossible today is only so because you haven’t had the opportunity to break the journey from here to there down into manageable chunks – now you are ready to start working on your career makeover.

5. Be the change. Once you have a vision of what you think you might want. It’s now time to assess where you are now. What are your strengths and your weaknesses? What skills do you have? Which ones will you need in order to achieve your career vision? You need to know where you are now versus where you want to be in the future. The rest is about managing the “gap” in between. Here is where the career makeover really takes place and this is the secret to making it possible…

6. Start at the end and work backwards. Imagine you have your dream job and are living your dream life. What was the final step you had to take to make this all possible, now what was the step before that? Work this process through until you arrive back at where you are today. Now you are aware of these steps, you know what you have to do to achieve your goals in manageable chunks. Your next course of action is to develop a plan for achieving these goals thereby giving each part of the process a timeline.

7. Now hone your skills. One of the most obvious ways to create a career makeover is to work on your skills. Whether you go back to school to earn an advanced degree or take training classes here and there, anything that you can do to improve yourself can benefit your career. Learn more about your industry; attend conferences where you can keep abreast of the latest trends. Network with possible mentors. Buy books written by leaders in your field. Read industry periodicals and other materials that deep your knowledge. Check with your human resources department to find out what types of internal training opportunities are available. Take advantage of your company’s tuition reimbursement programs. Continuing your education is essential no matter how you do it. Studying will not be a chore. If you are doing work you love you will be passionate about absorbing as much information about your field as you can!

And finally plan for the future.
No matter who you are or whom you know, you career will have its ups and downs. These days it’s unrealistic to think you’ll have a job for life. You might be transferred, demoted, or get a new boss that you don’t enjoy. You could even lose your job because of a downturn in your industry. These are realities of work life today. To lessen the possibility of your becoming an economic statistic it’s always a good idea to have options. This means you need to think about your exit plan. What would you do if you wanted to leave, or lost your job for whatever reason? Even the people who are happy in their jobs today should have an exit strategy, so take my advice and start working on it now. Don’t wait until it’s too late and you’re in panic mode.

In conclusion, always remember, no matter what career or life choices you make, ALL women need a strategic career plan. Your career makeover is ultimately your responsibility. You are the master of your life and it’s up to you to make a plan. Once you have a clear plan, take the steps that lead you to fulfilling your ultimate vision. One powerful way of helping you stay on track is by working with a coach who can help you make the transition more quickly. A good coach gives you support you need, helps you to stay focused and on track. With proper guidance, you will quickly find yourself achieving your career goals.

In order to be an outstanding physical therapist in medical field, there are 5 important areas that you need to focus on. These particular areas help you to develop yourself as a successful professional and you will be able to obtain satisfactory rewards.

1) Passion

No matter what line you are in, the most important thing you should have is the great passion in your work. You must have interest in what you are studying. Besides, you need to be compassionate and sincere in helping your patients when you start practicing in this line. A positive attitude in your study and your work is essential because it is the key determinant for success and failure.

2) Scientific background

Bear in mind, not everyone is born to be a therapist. This career is more suitable for people who have good scientific background. You need to accept the actual fact that there are a number of scientific subjects you must study and understand thoroughly throughout the whole course.

3) Formal Education

In order to be a qualified therapist, you need to complete your formal study at any university approved by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. You must obtain either a master degree or a doctorate degree in physical therapy. Besides, you must also pass the National Physical Therapy Examination provided by the Federation of State Boards.

4) Technical Based Skills and Soft Skills

In order to be competent in the real working environment, it is compulsory to equip yourself with all types of hands-on technical skills. At the same time, you are required to have good communication skills, both oral and written skills as you need to communicate well with your patients on their progress and treatment.

5) Experience

If you are a new comer in this field, you must expose yourself to as many cases as possible. This is to enable you to gain as much practical experience as you can.

Attitude makes all the difference in how much you like your job. Or, more likely, your jobs. If you are typical, you will have quite a few jobs throughout your lifetime. Many people start out quite young, with odd jobs for neighbors such as baby sitting, taking care of pets while the owners are away, yard work, and so on. You will find that even in these early situations, a positive attitude will result in many benefits.

Your neighbors will be more likely to re-hire a cheerful and friendly worker. Often, they may give you a tip just because you are pleasant to be around. As you transition into the more official working world, you will be in the position of looking for a job. The job hunt can be frustrating or perhaps scary at times, but again, keeping a positive outlook can be of great assistance. Employers will respond to a confident, friendly person in an interview. Though many will understand that the job applicant may be nervous, they would not be as appreciative of an unhappy or unfriendly seeming person. Always remember the old saying, “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.” Once you have secured a position in the workplace, your days will be much happier if you keep looking up. Enjoy what you do, and you’ll not only be a more contented person, you will find that your co-workers are more likely to give you a helping hand when you need it.

Co-workers can be a great source of friends both inside and outside of the workplace – and friends inside the workplace make a big difference. You can be more successful when dealing with customers, clients, or vendors if you can rely on the expertise of the friends (or friendly acquaintances) that you have made. You may even find that you make fewer errors, and get more done, just as a result of your positive thinking. Don’t forget that, for most, your job is about one third of your life. That alone is the biggest reason to find ways to enjoy working for work’s sake.

Your job does not have to be just a means to an end – it can be an end in itself. Many people find that their job gives their life a purpose. Ask many a retired person, and you’ll find that they miss many aspect of the workplace: the camaraderie with co-workers, learning new skills, the feeling of accomplishment that comes with a job well done. Maybe you’ve heard the advice: “Do what you love” when it comes to choosing a job or a career. My take is somewhat different : love what you do. You may not come up with a cure for cancer. You may not save the planet by inventing a car that runs on water. You may not be the greatest game inventor ever by coming up with and ESP interface for the computer. But you will have a successful life, and that’s what counts most in the end.

Travel nursing is a developing field that attracts more and more nursing professionals. There are some extraordinary benefits like good paying rates and the opportunity to travel on somebody else’s money.

Putting aside the material benefits we have to acknowledge that travel nursing can offer great emotional and professional accomplishment. As a travel nurse you will support the patient to get closer to his family, to visit the foreign country he always wanted, or to light a new hope in a foreign medical facility.

The negative side of travel nursing is that even if you travel a lot, you actually never get the chance to stop and enjoy the scenery of have pictures, unless you’re doing it from a moving car. On the financial side, even though the travel nursing is a well paid field you have to make sure that your working hours are long enough to bring you enough money. After all you don’t want a part-time job. Also the responsibility is very high and you will be confronted with life and death situations without having at disposition the equipments a normal hospital nurse has.

All in all if you are well prepared in your profession, and don’t mind strolling fast through locations or not having quality pictures from your trips, travel nursing is a rewarding job both financially and professionally.

The pay of a travel nurse is very good but the financial benefits do not stop here. The travel nurse should be entitled to the coverage of housing, travel expenses and tax deductions. A detailed analysis of the compensation package of every assignment should be enough to assure you get all the benefits.

One of the best things about being a travel nurse is that you don’t get to fall into routine and boredom. You always experience new social environments and new medical facilities. At the same you may get in contact with new techniques that will do only good to your knowledge and also to you resume.

Being a travel nurse assures you a great flexibility. You don’t have to travel all around the year and you can choose your own assignments. Also in your travels you get to see a lot of medical facilities, and prospect for a future relocation or a future normal nursing job. For those still in doubt be sure that travel nursing can prove to be a constant refreshing career with high financial and professional perspectives

As of October 2009, more than 15 million Americans were out of work, and the unemployment rate in the United States was listed at 9.8%.

But who counts as unemployed, and how exactly are unemployment statistics determined?

It’s not what you think

A common misconception of the unemployment rate is that it measures how many Americans are currently collecting unemployment benefits from the government. This is incorrect for a number of reasons. Primarily, not everyone in the country who is eligible for unemployment is actually receiving unemployment benefits. Secondly, many people who are unemployment could have run out of unemployment benefits.

The United States unemployment rate is actually an estimate based on a survey conducted every month by a division of the U.S Census Bureau.

Bureau of Labor Statistics

The unemployment rate is recalculated every month based on a survey known as the Current Population Survey. This survey is conducted on behalf of the Bureau of Labor Statistics by the Census Bureau.

The Survey

The Current Population Survey questions 60,000 randomly selected households in the United States every month. This equals approximately 110,000 individuals, which is much more than the average 2,000 people questioned in public optinion polls. The households chosen to participate are intended to be a cross-section representing the entire United States population.

Among other questions, the Current Population Survey tallies how many people in every household are eligible and looking for work. To be considered part of the labor force, and individual must be aged 16 or older and either currently be employed or looking for work. People who are not currently employed and are not looking for work are not included in the labor force or unemployment rate.

The Calculation

The percentage of the labor force found in the Current Population survey who are out of work and looking for employment are then compared to the current United States population and used as a representation of the number of unemployed Americans.

Unemployment is a serious issue today. The current U.S. unemployment rate is 9.8% as of this writing. Truly staggering. Unemployment benefits are your right. And nowadays you can even file for unemployment benefits online.

Each individual is responsible for building his or her own career. In this ever-changing world, everyone is looking for new ways to earn living. The purpose of career and job planning is to develop strategic plan based on one’s talents, aspirations and background, leading to a happy personal and professional life. Career planning involves identifying your choices, and then forming the goals that suit your individual needs, and the realities of job world.

How to Plan Your Career and Job

Planning a career and job is an important step for anyone who is either looking for job, or is already employed. It helps to set clear goals, and map the future career path. This panning helps you determine your weaknesses and strengths, and also helps you learn about your career options in different industries. If you are yet to enter the industry, career and job planning takes the form of interviews with prospective colleges, assessment tests, networking with other students and advisors and then finalizing your plan over a period of time. This will equip you with enough skills, knowledge and tools to enter the work world.

Job and life experiences, educational backgrounds and personal goals can either minimize or maximize the potential target career and jobs. Planning for your career involves doing some deductive reasoning and research about the locality of your job search. The types of jobs that are currently in demand vary greatly depending on the location. Getting the basic knowledge of geographic location and observing the statistics can provide you good information regarding jobs that are most competitive and highest in demand.

If you are already employed, there are certain mistakes you need to avoid so that you can plan your career and job well. Do not look for employment in other field without doing intense introspection, do not enter any field just because someone else is doing well in it, do not look for hot fields unless you feel they are suitable for you, do not go back to school without doing some test-drives in the new field, do not try to make the switch alone, do not make money the only deciding factor, be very careful when seeking services of search firms or placement agencies, do not expect to make the switch overnight and do not expect the career counselor to tell you which field to enter.

The foundation of your job search or career shift is solid, good and honest curriculum vitae. It must describe all your qualifications and entire professional career in detail. An effective resume can help you get your foot in the door and lead to personal interviews.

Knowing your salary range is an important aspect of career and job planning. This helps eliminate the prospective jobs falling outside your salary range. To know your realistic salary range, you need to do some research. The first important step is to know your fixed and variable expenses so that you know how much you need to maintain your current standard of living. While determining your salary range, keep in mind that what you might think you are really worth does not matter as much as what the employer thinks the job is worth.

Another important aspect of career and job planning is to get focused. You need to make real choices based on your career aspirations, skills and background.

Once you have successfully formulated you career and job plan, you need to find the employment through your contacts, friends, recent alumni, networking, professors and so on. If you are a fresher, it is advisable that you have a mentor who can also act as a resource in your job hunt. If you are planning a career move, yellow pages, classifieds, career fairs and employment agencies can be quite helpful.

Most people are pretty nervous when preparing for an interview, whether it’s their first or 51st time. However there are some individuals who are beyond nervous when interview time rolls around – they’re flat out fearful. They could be a shy person or just be very nervous in a situation where they are scrutinized and judged.

If you fall into the category of being fearful of job interviews, there are a few ways to side step the fear and enter the situation with confidence. If you need some tips for your next interview, here are some that will give you a good start.

Make Sure You’re Prepared

One reason that people get nervous before and during interviews is because they’re anticipating the unknown – they simply have no idea what will be discussed and fear they won’t have the answers. If you are prepared and sure of yourself, the fear will not be so prominent. This means, gathering a list of questions that are often asked on interviews (which can be found all over the Internet) and running through the list everyday from the time you learn of the interview until the actual day.

If you’re not sure how you effective going through the list will be for you, you can always have a friend step in and act as an interviewer. The more closely you recreate the interview, the more comfortable you’re likely to be in the real thing. You can rehearse the ideas you want to get across, practice confident body language, and even learn how to ad-lib a bit by having your friend throw in questions not on your list.

Wear Your Favorite Outfit

If you have a favorite business outfit that you feel very comfortable in, wear it. You’ll be surprised how much this improves your interview success. Don’t wear something that causes you discomfort – either mentally or physically.

“Relax, Relate, Release”

You may have heard this phrase from time to time to signify calming down before a stressful situation, but it’s something that you should definitely consider before your interview. You need to exude confidence in your interview so taking a few deep breaths may be helpful in calming your mind and body.

Rely On You

Sometimes, job candidates are so desperate to find work that they pretend to be someone they’re not just to get the job. This is not a wise thing to do as the interviewers have been through this many times and want someone genuine. You’ll be very relieved that you didn’t put on an act If you end up getting the job since you can just be yourself. Instead, rely on your own personality since this is who they’ll have to know once you’re hired.

Of course, a job interview can be a scary thing. However, if you make sure you’re prepared, have a well-written resume, and are comfortable, calm, and confident in yourself, you’ll ace the interview and will likely get a call back in no time.

The economy today is not as great as it once was. Now, the prices of the necessities of life are skyrocketing. In the world market, the gasoline price is constantly going up. This in turn affects the prices of other basic necessities as well as luxuries we have in life. All of these are reasons why people need to earn extra cash to provide for everything they need and simply to make both ends meet.

There are many ways to make money fast. It can be done through traditional jobs like baby sitting, tutorials and selling stuff. However, with the internet, a person can earn extra cash just by sitting at home in from of his or her computer. This is more appealing since it doesn’t require a great deal of patience, knowledge and marketing strategy. All it requires is a basic knowledge of the computer and the internet.

One of the ways to make money fast on the internet is through answering some surveys and reading emails. Some companies need feedback about the products and services they are offering. So, they conduct online surveys to people who are their market. All a person has to do is to answer a few questions honestly and get paid for it. Another one of the ways to make money fast is through reading emails. Some companies receive a great amount of emails everyday that needs to be read and answered. So, to lessen the burden of reading and answering it themselves, they hire people online to do it for them. These things make easy and quick money.

Among the ways to make money fast on the internet, freelance writing is the one which pays a little higher than the rest. This is because of the proficiency one must have in writing and in the English language. This job doesn’t require a Bachelor’s Degree or a Major in English. All it needs is the ability to construct sentences and make a few paragraphs regarding the topics that an employer gives. So, if sentence construction is not a problem, this is a job which definitely gives high rewards.

If selling is not an innate skill, the internet is a good place to start selling products. This is another one of the ways to make money fast because the world of internet creates a wide range of market for different businesses. EBay for one is a great avenue for selling products. The internet makes selling products easy because a person doesn’t have to do sales talk to sell a product. All that needs to be done is describing the product as accurately as possible and allow people to look for it online. In this case, costumers go to the seller and not the other way around.

If computer is the passion of an individual and web designing is not a problem, he or she can start one of the ways to make money fast by making and designing websites for a living. It pays well and it requires more than just average skills in the web programming area.

What’s bigger than the recession? Climate change. And world leaders are struggling to agree how to tackle it. Good news: there is something you can do about it. Environmentally focused approaches are creating green jobs that in turn can become the “green shoots” of recovery that the UK economy so badly needs.

Green jobs are not sidelined for the stereotype of “do-gooders” in brown cords and woolly jumpers – it’s a pragmatic way to help change the world around you.

Chantél du Plooy takes a look at the green-collar opportunities available in the UK and how you can get involved.

Combating climate change
Climate change is natural. It is the atmosphere’s way of adapting to the amount of energy it receives from the sun.

If these changes take centuries, the biosphere can adapt normally. However, climate change is currently taking place too fast. Over the last 200 years human activity such as burning fossil fuels, dramatic population growth and clearing woodland areas has increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

According to the Committee on Climate Change, the UK needs to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 34% by 2020. This number is likely to increase if the UN negotiations this December in Copenhagen leads to a new deal.

A report released recently by Greenpeace International and the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC) indicated that a strong deal in Copenhagen could create 6.9 million jobs within the clean energy sector across the globe by 2030.

Reuters reported on a statement made by Greenpeace USA’s global arming campaign director, Damon Moglen who said: “Global leaders can tackle the twin crises of global economic recession and climate change head on by investing in renewable energy.

“We can choose green jobs and growth or unemployment, ecological and social collapse.”

Green-collar jobs the seeds to recovery

The Government doesn’t have a choice in the battle against climate change. If they do not comply with powerful and effective eco-friendly projects, they face massive financial penalties.

Combating climate change directly creates jobs which could ultimately help the country back to recovery.

But where will the money come from?

Currently the UK looses £650m per year through improper recycling. According to a report from Friends of the Earth, we send recyclable resources to landfills or incinerators which lead to 19 million tonnes of unnecessary carbon dioxide.

Dr Michael Warhurst, from Friends of the Earth commented to the Ecologist: “The UK is woefully lagging behind much of Europe on recycling.

“Flanders in Belgium recycles over 70 per cent of its waste – that’s twice as much as we recycle here.

“Our low recycling rate means that we have to import more expensive resources like aluminium – this is economic madness when they could be recycled here and sold for profit instead.”

Presently the Government has implemented multiple green schemes that include funding electric car production in the UK.

A £2.3bn aid package has been made available and Tata Motors has already received £10m to build the Indica Vista EV in the country.

Nissan has awarded its UK factory in Sunderland the opportunity to produce lithium batteries for their electric car.

Sunderland employs 4,000 workers and Business Secretary Lord Mandelson is hopeful that the factory might also win the full production on the vehicle.
“The Government is doing everything possible to secure electric vehicle production in Sunderland,” he commented to The Northern Echo.

Lord Mandelson added: “I am excited that we are going to see battery production in Britain, and I’m very hopeful that will be followed up by the full car production.”
In the field of renewable energy, Glasgow has recently been chosen as the appropriate location to build a £20million research centre.

The centre will have to come up with a multi-billion pound renewable energy programme for the entire Europe. This project will create 250 top engineering jobs, the Herald Scotland reported.
The future according to the Conservative Party will sprout a “Green Deal”.
The deal will introduce plans to green UK homes in order to cut carbon emissions and create jobs.
Tories will create energy efficiency services that will earn £2.5bn a year and create around 70,000 jobs and additional apprenticeships.

There are a number of jobs that have a green approach other than working in renewable energy, eco-friendly construction or hybrid vehicles. Green jobs include hydrologist, environmental engineers, pest control technicians, conservation biologist, science teacher, toxicologists, pollution control technicians, ecologists and the list continues.

Benefiting from going green

Green projects lead to job creation and generates money, which in turn funds more eco-friendly schemes and career opportunities.

The benefits of green projects are endless. Apart from the physical improvements to the environment and the economy, there is also other ways to gain.

An eco-friendly approach to your corporation can influence your company’s image positively. As more consumers become environmentally conscious, their purchasing habits transform as well.

According to Workplace Culture, being eco-friendly encourages productivity and job satisfaction.

A survey conducted by the Kenexa Research Institute (KRI) in 13 countries revealed that sustainability programmes have a constructive influence on employees.

The survey also unveiled that workers who are impressed with their companies’ eco-friendly strategies, are proud to work there and would promote their companies to others.

Practical tips to make a difference

Not everyone can drop their current jobs and join the World Wildlife Federation (WWF).
However, this isn’t an excuse to turn a blind eye. Here are some practical tips to make a difference in your everyday working life:
1. Use paper scarcely: Think twice before printing out an email, print on both sides and if possible print two pages per sheet
2. Recycle: Not only paper but also print cartridges, cans etc
3. Shut down: Your computer and everything else running before you leave for home
4. Food & Drink: Eat and drink out of containers which you can be washed and re-used like plastic lunchboxes and porcelain mugs
5. Car pool: If you have to drive to work everyday, try and organise a car pool or share a ride with at least one other person

The Child Maintenance Enforcement Commission (CMEC) offers information and support in addition to an effective enforcement service for child maintenance options. It is responsible for taking charge of the payment of child maintenance. CMEC is a non-departmental public body with prime objective to ensure that children maintenance arrangements are in place.

Thousands of children suffer as thousands of absent parents neglect their duties. CMEC provides financial support to children who live with a lone parent or legal guardian. Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission create policy and information for the child maintenance system. The financial arrangement for child maintenance can be provided through the statutory scheme or can also be arranged privately between the child’s parents.

Main functions of CMEC can be categorized as:

- It promotes financial responsibility that parents have for their children and hence ensures that non-resident parents acknowledge the importance of their child maintenance contribution. Hence CMEC aims to ensure that parents living apart understand their responsibilities and take appropriate action to provide financial help to their children.

- It provides information and support on the different Child Maintenance options that are available to parents. This can include offering support online, on the telephone or in-person. Issues like housing, legal and financial concerns can be discussed in confidence and can help provide additional understanding of the way child maintenance works.

- It provides an efficient statutory child maintenance service with an improved assessment, collection and Child Support Enforcement processes. In addition to informing the non-resident parent of the amount due, and the dates when payments is expected, both the court and Child Support Agency can make the non-resident parent’s employer deduct maintenance payments directly from the earnings.

The CSA is a Child Support Agency that enforces regulated financial payment and hence provides vital resources for many lone parent families. The child maintenance payment is paid by the non-resident parent to the resident, or parent with care, after the CSA has examined the information and concerning income provided by the non-resident parent’s employers. CSA reform will trace the non-resident parent and issue payment instructions in case some parents evade payment of the support fund for their child. Child Support Agency provides a maintenance service where parents with care can register an application for assistance. For enforcement of child maintenance orders, steps like freezing of accounts, early sale of property or prison for parents in extreme cases can be there in case of violation or refusal to pay child maintenance.

If you need information and support options on how to arrange maintenance, and select among various private or statutory options for making arrangements best suited to the circumstances you can always relay on Child Support Agency. You can log on to www.cv-service.org/csa.htm to know more about the Child Maintenance Enforcement Commission (CMEC) and related information.

If you’ve always wanted to bring light to where there was darkness, then you have a need to become an electrician. This job isn’t for the faint-hearted, however. It is a very difficult job with its own rewards and sacrifices. While it is very hands-on, it is definitely not a job for people who are not quick in thinking and adapting to certain situations. When you’re working with electrical wiring and live currents, it is important that you remember everything you have ever learnt about a specific situation. So, if you believe that becoming an electrician is for someone who isn’t smart, then you’ve come to the wrong section. You definitely need to be smart, dedicated and hard-working to become an electrician. If that sounds like something you’d like to become, then please, continue reading on so you can find out how to become an electrician.

If you’re in high school and reading this, then it is very important that you take these basic subjects in high school, including the following: math, science, electronics and mechanical drawing. While it is not mandatory that you take these subjects, it will set you up on your way to becoming an electrician and making your path a smoother one at the end of the day. There is a lot of technical components to becoming an electrician and you need to have the basics of math, science, electronics and even mechanical drawing to safely sail through your apprenticeship. Before you apply to become an apprentice, you can consider joining the military in the electrical field. The navy and the army have a wonderful program that allows you to continue safely on your path of becoming an electrician.

Your next step is becoming an actual electrician apprentice. To do this you will have to call the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee; through them you will have classes and training that they will educate you in the minimum requirements of becoming an electrician. If you’re wondering for how long you will need to do your apprenticeship for, it has to be done over 4 – 5 years. During each year you will need to do over eight thousand working hours that have been done on the job, actually training. That is a minimum of two thousand working hours each year. Including those eight thousand hours that you will need to work, you will also need to have at least 144 hours of classes that you need to attend in order to get all the theory knowledge that is required to become an electrician.

While this might seem a lot of hours, you need to be able to prepare for the volatile working situation you are going to be putting yourself into on a day-to-day basis. Once you have finally finished your apprenticeship, you can finally get your electricians license. Depending on where you are the requirements will be different. So, know that you know how to become an electrician – what are you waiting for? Go become one!

Did you know that numbers can make a huge difference in your ability to create a quality resume? It’s true. The more numbers you add to your resume, the more you are enhancing it and increasing your chances of getting called in for an interview.

Of course, adding numbers doesn’t simply meaning writing “1, 2, 3″ in random places around the resume. They have to be used strategically to make a difference. But if you adopt the right strategies, you can bet that you will have enhanced your resume tenfold.

Start with Amounts

When jotting down accomplishments, not merely responsibilities, to your resume, you want to get as in-depth as possible. This means listing the amounts associated with everything you have accomplished. For instance, if you were a sales representative at your previous employer, you can mention that you not just sold products for the company, but that you sold X amount of products for the company.

Also, it’s a good idea to talk about how many clients you were able to sell to. The more detailed you’re able to be when describing your accomplishments, the more vividly you can paint a picture of what you’ll be able to accomplish if the company hires you.

Move On to Money

So now that you’ve been able to successfully describe how many products you’ve sold, and how many clients you sold to, during your time at your previous company, let’s think in terms of the dollar bill. If you were a sales representative, your ultimate job was to sell products or services to as many clients as possible so that you could make money for the company. So how much money would you say you made?

Obviously, the more money you were able to make, the more successful you probably were at your job, so you want to break down as many numbers as you can. Don’t just total out all that you made in your career there. If you sold more than one product or service, don’t be shy about listing total amounts for those that you sold the most of. These dollar amounts will tie into your explanations for how many products and clients you sold, so that your story can become that much more vivid.

Don’t Forget Time

But you can’t thoroughly list an accomplishment without mentioning time. In other words, over how many years did you sell products? How fast a time frame were you able to sell X amount of products to X amount of clients that made X amount of dollars? Or how many times a month were you asked to come up with another important sales strategy? You’re catching on now, right? It’s all about making sure you don’t leave any important details out. If you don’t mention it all, you’re simply selling yourself short.

So now it’s time to pass you the baton. It shouldn’t be hard to come up with the numbers you need to fill in the blanks on your resume. Just take time to think about all the great things you’ve accomplished at your previous jobs so that you can show your future employer what a great employee they’re getting.

It may seem like a bit of an impossible task switch careers once you’ve reached the executive level, but it happens more than you think – and it is contemplated even more than that. In fact, according to Execunet’s 2009 Executive Job Market Intelligence Report, 94 percent of the senior-level executives surveyed would consider switching industries.

If you’re a part of this statistic, and are seriously making moves in this direction, you are about to embark on a life-changing experience. However, this venture won’t come without challenges. So to help you on your journey, here are some tips to consider as you make your attempt to switch careers at the executive level.

Know the New Career Like You Know the Old One

As an executive, you know how important it is to know your industry inside and out. Of course, for you to have made it to the level you are currently at, you probably spent years conducting research, shaking hands and effectively working your way to the top. In order to make a lateral move to another career, you’ll need to get to know the new career just as well as you know the old one, including the customers, products, metrics and process, among other aspects. Of course, you won’t have decades to get the job done.

So how do you do it? The good news is that you’re already a pro at networking, marketing yourself and researching the ins and outs of the career you’re leaving, so all you have to do is apply your same strategies to the new one. It may mean that you’ll need to get out and explore networking functions, join boards and join social networking sites that cater to your new career. The more work you put into getting to know the new career, the more you’ll increase your chances of convincing an employer that you’re no “newbie” in the field you aspire to be a part of.

Stress Commonalities in Your Resume

While you’re trying to start a new career, you don’t want to place too much emphasis on the contrasts between your old career and the one you hope to dive into. Of course, you can’t completely overlook obvious gaps that can’t be avoided because you didn’t acquire specific experience. Instead of focusing on them in a negative way, turn them into positives and marry them with skills that you feel can enhance their goals.

However, any contrasts would likely be mentioned in your interview and shouldn’t be focused on at all in your resume. Instead, you want to note only your skills and accomplishments that match the company’s needs. If you send the message, “I know I’m not from your field/industry, but I’m good enough to be here,” instead of just projecting, “I’m the right person for your position,” you could be setting yourself back – so far back that you’ll fall right behind your competition.

Stepping into a new career can be a scary prospect, but certainly one you can handle. If you learn all there is to know about your career of interest, and essentially nurture it as you did your previous one, you’ll be able to convince employers that you’re indeed the right person for any job you apply for.

Every applicant today faces a challenge. With such stiff competition, having a wonderful resume is not enough. Your interview also has to go smoothly as well. In short, you have to know how to persuade someone to hire you.

Getting people to see that you’re the one for their company is not just a one step thing. There are a lot of factors you can use to cinch the job. If you want to know how to persuade someone to hire you, read on!

Step 1: Look your best.

Let’s face it. Your appearance has a lot to do with whether you get the job or not. I’m not saying you have to look like a Hollywood superstar to get a simple job. I’m just saying that you need to take your looks into consideration.

When going for an interview, you must dress for success. Go for semi-formal clothes with a slight tasteful twist. Keep your hair organized. If your hair is long, tie it. If you have an unruly beard, shave it off or at least keep it looking decent. You should smell good and look neat. Shoes should be shined and fingernails kept clean.

You might not think your interviewers bother with the small details, but believe me when I say that everything about you is under careful observation.

Step 2: Be prepared and confident.

If you’re not used to interviews, don’t be embarrassed to practice the question and answer at home. If you want to learn how to persuade someone to hire you, you must treat the interview just like a conversation with a friend.

Confidence never fails to impress. When the interviewer shakes your hand, keep your grip firm, but not so much that you crack a bone.

Keep your head at eye level. Never too high, never too low either. Don’t forget to smile since that will help alleviate some of the nervousness.

When you speak, your voice must not crack. It should be loud and clear enough to be heard, but not too loud that it annoys your interviewer.

Step 3: Show interest in their company.

If you want to learn how to persuade someone to hire you, you have to show them that you’re really interested in their company. This is different from begging in desperation.

Never ever say, “Please hire me” because that sends out the message that nobody else has hired you. Showing interest in the company means knowing how the business works and how you can contribute to the company’s mission. Don’t sound like another applicant who’s just in it for the pay.

With these tips, I’m confident you’ll learn how to persuade someone to hire you in no time.

Consulting firms including Deloitte, IBM, CSC, and KPMG are staffing to support financial institution and process improvement practices, as they are landing significant projects to help clients build profitability improving technology. Some of these positions are straight finance, while others are profitability consulting (supply chain, for example), and others are finance/technology hybrid roles.

Financial advisors including Edward Jones, Morgan Stanley, Scotttrade, Merrill Lynch, New York Life, AXA, and VALIC are building. While Wall Street may still be hurting from last year’s financial meltdown, Financial advisory firms on Main Street still have an increasing needs for client facing employees as Baby Boomers continue retirement.

Did you know that the way you sit, smile and shake hands can speak volumes during a job interview? It’s true. There is no manual to read to determine how you should manage your body language; however, if you make certain gestures, you’re definitely sending a certain message.

So how can you know what message you’re sending with the body language you’re using? Here is a quick guide to give you some ideas of what you’re saying with your gestures.

Crossing Your Legs

While crossing your legs during an interview seems to be a polite and professional gesture, some experts beg to differ. In fact, this action actually sends a message of complacency, which is not what you want to communicate to your interviewer. This is why it is advised that you instead plant both feet firmly on the floor. It demonstrates confidence in who you are.

Cracking Your Knuckles

If you have body tics, like cracking the joints in your neck or fingers, it may betray your nerves. While you want to show humility in your interview, you never want to let them see you sweat. However, if you’re busy nurturing nervous tics like twirling your hair or fiddling with your cufflinks, you may show more nervousness than intended.

If you know that this is a potential issue for you, it’s good to practice sitting in the interview without making nervous gestures. You can make sure to clasp your hands so you don’t allow them to move around. This may help you keep your nervous tendency under control.

Folding Your Arms

Did you know that folding your arms in any situation sends a message that you’re closing yourself off from the person you’re communicating with? This means, if you fold your arms in an interview, you’re sending the interviewer the message that you’re not inviting him or her in. In other words, you can appear to be an unfriendly person, which could potentially X you out of the job.

Leaning Back in Your Chair

When in an interview, it’s not a good idea to lean back in your chair. This gives the impression that you’re overly relaxed and disinterested in the job. It can also make you appear untidy. To remedy this, sit a little bit forward in your chair. This helps you present yourself as alert and eager to answer any questions thrown your way.

Invading the Interviewer’s Space

If you’re the friendly type, you may be unaware if you ever invade an interviewer’s space; however, doing so should be avoided. An example would be if you are sitting on the other side of the interviewer’s desk then stretch your hands or body over the desk. Since this desk is a personal space for the interviewer, you don’t want to invade this space. If you do, you could come across as unprofessional and disrespectful.

There are many other gestures that you may subconsciously make that create a strong message. If you’re not sure of your own mannerisms, you can set up a mock interview and either have a friend tell you about your body language, or videotape it and play it back. The more you’re aware of the message you’re sending, the more you can improve your interviewing skills.
