Financial advisors including Edward Jones, Morgan Stanley, Scotttrade, Merrill Lynch, New York Life, AXA, and VALIC are building. While Wall Street may still be hurting from last year’s financial meltdown, Financial advisory firms on Main Street still have an increasing needs for client facing employees as Baby Boomers continue retirement. In addition, as layoffs occur, workers need to roll over employer-managed 401-Ks into IRAs.

Continuing from Part 1, let us see a few more career change mistakes that can disrupt the most successful professional lives when made without giving the following a thought:

Possibilities: Career change is a very critical phase in anyone’s career and hence it is imperative that one considers all possibilities and consequences of the same. Researching all such possibilities would be a good practice before making the switch. This research can be done online, by talking to your network and also by reading job profiles and news related to the new career. This will give you an insight into various careers that are available for you and will help you to make a more informed decision regarding your career change.

Personal parameters: Opting for a career change without self reflection and without considering personal likes and dislikes could be suicidal for any career. Assessing one’s own interests, skills and values is highly critical to any career change. Such an analysis is easy to do and all one needs is to make a list of things that one loves to do- in a job, at home or even in hobbies and another list of things that you will never want to do again. While deciding on a career changes, these lists can be used to perform a SWOT (Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats) and can have a great bearing on a conceived career change.

Blinded by other’s success: A career change cannot be bought upon oneself by just looking at someone who is a success in a different career. You are you and not the other person; the personal qualities differ and make the thin line between success and failure. Considering that career while deciding upon a career change is good, but do not try and replicate someone else’s success. There are too many assumptions in doing so and most people who have attempted a career changes in such circumstances have failed. The grass certainly appears greener on the other side but is not the case most times, especially for something as critical as a career change.

Experience and Education: While contemplating a career change, it is always important to research and strategize on bridging the gap of education, experience and skills between the present career and the new career that you are trying to make a career change to. Transferable or common skills are important but a little bit of focused education and skill building may become important to make the career change. You could begin by interacting with professionals in the new career and attending informative workshops.

Job search techniques: Making a career change almost always involves a job change, so it is important that one polishes his or her job search techniques before embarking on the search. Interviewing skills and resume writing techniques would also need some polish especially since you are out of the search market for some time pursuing your current career. Make sure that you go through these basics before you decide on the career change.

Conclusion

A career change involves too many personal variables. Make sure that you polish up on almost all variables before you decide on your all important career change.

Choosing to make a career change in the current economy is not a decision to make lightly. Of course whether the decision for a career change is one you made for yourself or one that has been made for you makes all the difference in the world.

If you have suddenly found yourself without a job, you will need to consider where you want to go from here. Be realistic. And be honest. Determine what your good qualities are as well as what your bad qualities are. And think about what you may really want to do. If it is possible it is always good to consider something you have an interest in or are passionate about as a career. Having the luxury of enjoying your job is worth a great deal if you have to work for a living.

Are you able to transfer something you care about to a career change? For instance if you really have a need to take care of people, you may be thinking about a nursing career. There is certainly a lot of responsibility in nursing, but if you are able to deal with it and you are able to make decisions quickly, this could be the perfect job for you. There is no doubt that you can consider this a long term career, there is always going to be a need for nurses. And you can pretty much write your own ticket. You can go anywhere in the country and you can choose to specialize and make more money than regular nursing.

If you are considering nursing as a career change, unless you are already in the medical field, you will need more education. The best place to begin is with your local college, university or training center. They can advise you what you need to be able to get the certification you need to begin your new career as a nurse. Of course you will need to be sure that the training program you choose is recognized by the hospital or medical center you are choosing as a potential employer. Some of the programs work in conjunction with hospitals and medical centers, they provide the practical experience needed and often they will provide employment after you get your certification.

If you do not have a career change in mind already, you may decide that starting a business of your own is the best course for you. Of course, you will want to consider a business of your own very carefully. You will need to determine if the business is something that is needed. If it is a proven business, is it still a necessary business, or is it on the down swing? The computer industry has been very lucrative but there have been so many changes to the manufacturing of computers, that many of the suppliers and employees are no longer needed. You need to be realistic when you are thinking about your career change, do not start a business that will end up like the computer manufacturers.

When you were a child, you probably dreamed of having that one perfect career. A cowboy, firefighter, astronaut, or perhaps a circus clown. But then, something else happened. You grew up. Suddenly you had grown-up responsibilities to meet and bills to pay. You graduated from school and were expected to take a good, decent job. So you settled on what you could get at the time, and your dream job remained just a dream.

If you dreamed of being a truck driver, it’s not too late to make it happen. After all, you spend hours fantasizing about hitting the open road, so why not use that time to make it happen? If your dream gig is driving a big rig; if you live to cruise the highways, visit new places and explore new horizons; this is the time to get started.

Really successful people don’t just love what they do; they do what they love. A paycheck is not their measure of success. It’s the pride and confidence that they have in their work. Other people are envious, but those sour souls think it must be luck or a guarded secret, rather than taking the cue and following their own dreams. Jealous people often fail to realize that successful people worked hard for their good fortune, and sometimes struggle to land their dream career.

Dream careers are not reserved for a blessed few. You have a dream, too, and you can attain it. But, you need to be willing to work hard to get there. Magic and mystery are not part of the process. It takes only a few simple and proven steps. If you want to be a truck driver, these four steps will get you on the road:

1. Believe in Yourself. If you really believe that a driving career is in reach, you will attain it. Self-confidence is a critical and often overlooked element to true success. You need to genuinely believe that you deserve to be a trucker, and can handle the responsibilities. People who realize their career dreams are those who believe in their goals. And it is not difficult to become a true believer. On paper or screen, jot down your image of yourself working in a truck driving job in detail. Sketch a simple picture that you can read or look at daily. Use this form of positive reinforcement to inspire you.

2. Get the Facts. Now that you are confident in your own potential for success, you must back up your beliefs with relevant facts. Research what specific steps will be needed to bring your picture to life. Once you know this, you’ll be more comfortable when it’s time to take action. Where are the nearest truck driver training schools? How do they rate with graduates? Will your dream job require specialized training beyond the CDL or LGV/HGV license? If a trucking career will mean a drop in pay, is that important to you or do you value happiness over money? Ask every possible question, and give yourself honest answers. Once you have all of the facts, you will be prepared and ready to take action.

3. Commit to Your Success. Some people are truly frightened of success. To be a true success not only requires honesty and commitment, but also contains the potential to fail. Successful people are almost never afraid to say, “I will”. Most of us are not inclined to make strong commitments. We often say that keeping ourselves “tied down” will somehow hinder us from being open to other opportunities. Don’t obsess about the odds of something better coming along. Commitment gives you a far more powerful reason to get out of bed each morning and work toward becoming a truck driver.

4. Make a Plan. Once you’ve committed to starting a trucking career, map out the path you’ll take. Look at your research and put your list of facts into play. Take your big plan and break it down into smaller and more easily obtainable goals. Create a timeline and write these goals on your calendar. Make a ‘to-do’ list, and then get on your way. It’s important to manage your priorities and focus only on the items that will actually bring you closer to your success. Stop dreaming, and use your time to accomplish those all-important small first steps. If you need help, ask for it. Delegate or eliminate tasks whenever possible. If your family supports your choice to become a truck driver, speak with them about helping you accomplish your goals.

No matter what you may believe about those fortunate and truly successful people, dream careers don’t fall from the sky. Success comes to those who really believe in themselves, and work hard to bring their dreams to life. Don’t worry about taking those small steps; it’s the best way to reap your biggest rewards. One day soon you’ll be rolling down the highway as a confident, successful truck driver enjoying your dream career.

Changing careers is not as complicated and difficult as it used to be 50 years ago, with so many employment opportunities available one can switch not just jobs but switch careers. Interestingly, it is no longer uncommon for middle aged individuals to change careers. If you are currently in a job you are not happy with or feel that you would be better off doing something else in life, here are few tips to help you evaluate and assist you in a career change.

How satisfied are you with your job? Measuring job satisfaction is not a simple task because everyone has their fair share of good days and bad days. The best way to assess your job satisfaction is by keeping a journal; keep a journal of your day to day activities, your interaction with colleagues and also with your superiors. At the end of each month, go through the journal and see how many ‘good days’ and ‘bad days’ you have had.

The personal inventory If you are convinced that you need to change careers, the first thing you need to do is make a personal inventory. Take some time away from work and analyze you strengths and weaknesses and try and find skills that you think can help you change careers. If your skills are being put to good use then you might need to change jobs and not careers. If you are satisfied that your current job is not doing justice to your skill sets the next task is finding a career that will utilize your skills to the maximum.

Brainstorming Finding careers that do justice to your skills will not be a simple task. You should discuss your core values and skills with friends and family members to get creative and critical inputs. It is important to keep your options open and consider all possible careers before you start short listing careers.

Short listing careers Chances are, there will be more than one career paths available to you. If this is the case, you should have a detailed understanding of each prospective career. If you are not satisfied with your research, speak to a career counsellor to get a better understanding of each career option.

Research As mentioned earlier in the article, it is important to research each prospective career path. Once you have short listed careers you are interested in, carry out further research and look into aspects like working hours, pay scales and also the amount of stress you are likely to encounter. If possible, try and volunteer for activities that are linked to the career you are planning on choosing.

Look for educational opportunities Before you embark on any career, make sure you have the necessary certifications/qualifications required. If possible, look out for colleges and professional groups that are offering courses relating to your new career. If your new organization does not offer in-house training, you will definitely need to look for educational institutions that are offering training courses and certifications relevant to your new job.
