Here are some tips for a job interview that will help you come out of the process on top. When you walk into a job interview, the product you are selling is YOU. In order to successfully sell yourself, you must market your personal brand. That is, you must build a reputation that qualifies you, and only you, to successfully fulfill the job requirements. The job interview is your time to shine – your time to sell yourself and your abilities. In order to do that, you must have faith in your personal brand. That’s what separates you from the rest of the candidates for your desired position. If you can do so successfully, you will be well on your way to landing the job of your dreams.

The successful job interview process begins when you accept the interview, and ends when the employer decides to hire you. The more you are able to communicate professionalism with personality, distinction and skill, the better your chance of getting the job.

15 Sure-fire Ways to a Successful Job Interview:

Before the interview:

Use the 3 P’s – Plan, Prepare, and Practice.

1. Prepare for the interview; research the company and prepare questions based on your research.

2. Do mock interviews in order to prepare for all questions, especially uncomfortable ones.

3. Dress professionally even if the company dress code is business casual.

4. Arrive early! (12 – 15 minutes before the interview)

At the interview:

5. Give your interviewer a firm handshake. A powerful handshake and a genuine smile will get you off to a good start.

6. Beware of your Body Language; sit erect, stand and walk with confidence, lean forward toward the interviewer.

7. Build rapport – use powerful, effective communication techniques. Take charge of the encounter without being overbearing.

8. Be a good listener. Answer only what’s asked, in a brief but effective manner.

9. Show enthusiasm and sincere interest. Don’t act desperate.

10. Take notes. You may need to refer to them later in the interview.

11. Communicate your skills, qualifications, credentials and the benefits you offer.

12. Demonstrate your accomplishments; how you improve sales, reduce cost, improve productivity, solve organizational problems. In short, demonstrate why you’re good for the organization’s bottom line.

13. Make eye contact. It demonstrates confidence, trust, and power.

14. If you want the position, ask for it – directly.

After the interview:

15. Send a follow-up thank you letter. The letter should state what interests you about the position, why you are suitable for the job, and your appreciation for the interviewer’s time.

The Top 10 Interview Questions

According to a recent survey by ResumeDoctor.com, the following are the 10 most frequently asked questions in interviews:

1. Describe your ideal job/boss.

2. Why are you looking for a job? or Why are you leaving your current position?

3. What unique experiences or qualifications separate you from other candidates?
4. Tell me about yourself.

5. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

6. Describe a time when you were faced with a challenging situation and how you handled it. It’s almost guaranteed that you will be asked this question.

7. What are your short-term/long-term goals?

8. What are some of your strengths in dealing with people?

9. What are your salary requirements?

10. Why are you interested in this position? Our company?

Ever wondered why some people simply appear more positive than others? Being positive is not at all in the state of mind. It also translates to how well you communicate — your choice of words, your tone of voice and your non-verbal cues. What types of words should you use to make yourself a more confident and positive when getting one of the job opportunities in NZ and you as a person?

Adecco New Zealand – the leading human resource service provider in NZ which offers thousands of available Dunedin jobs, Wellington jobs, Christchurch jobs and Auckland jobs gives few tips to help you be more positive when getting a job in New Zealand and in the workplace;

At job interviews…

At job New Zealand interviews, speak clearly and confidently. Do not speak too fast as this could indicate that you are nervous. When describing your job scope and duties, use active words to demonstrate your capabilities, e.g. “initiated” or “conceptualized” etc. Speak enthusiastically and ask relevant questions about the job – this will demonstrate your interest in the position. Avoid any negativity such as complaining about your current employer or boss and putting down your ex-colleagues.

While on the job…

A positive worker is a morale booster to the company. Everyone likes being around with pleasant people at the workplace. When it comes to job New Zealand promotions and rewards, bosses notice people who communicate effectively and confidently. Make these tips your workplace habits from now on!

• Be tactful when presenting bad news. For example, if there is a problem at work, remember to provide your bosses with possible solutions. Convey the problem to them calmly by stating the facts, then present your possible solutions and seek their advice on which solution would be best.

• Always use positive words. Instead of negative word like “problems”, use “challenges”. Instead of using the word “complaints” use the word “feedback”. Use confident words, like “I believe” or “I’m confident that this will work”. Your words should demonstrate conviction and your commitment to the task on hand.

• Practice good manners. Always say “thank you” and “please”. It is simple manners but many people forget them at the workplace.

In written communication…

The same rules apply when communicating via email or memos. In fact, be extra careful with written communication, as the risk of it being misinterpreted is higher. There are no non-verbal cues to support the message; therefore, always choose your words carefully – a misunderstood message may cost you your job.

Unrealistic scenarios and promises are counter-productive. When planning our future, we should think twice before trusting exaggerated positive statements. On the other hand, we should also refrain from painting all alternatives as dark and all attempts as hopeless.

Various approaches have been tried against poverty, with different levels of success. Living in an environment of deprivation can undermine a man’s spirit and this is why he needs to figure out a feasible plan to improve his situation. What we know is that unrealistic expectations do not work.

If you happen to find yourself living in a poor district of town, you do not need to give up your hopes of a better future. If you are suffering from lack of formal education, becoming bitter is not going to improve anything.

What is needed is to take action to detect and seize available opportunities, but frequently, those can only be perceived when we look at the world realistically. When a man is unemployed or stuck in low-income occupations, he might develop a view of the world that prevents him from seizing his chances.

The conviction that nobody is going to listen to one’s troubles does not necessarily correspond to reality. The perceptions that nobody is going to help and that no one cares are contrary to the fact that opportunities, although scarce, do exist.

The great news is that businessmen, generally speaking, like to grow their companies and that this creates sales openings in many areas. The way out of poverty involves the recognition that a man must often take whatever jobs are offered, even if he would have liked to do something else.

Sales work is available almost at any time, irrespective of the overall economic situation, since selling is the most critical business function. Taking a sales position is frequently the only way available to break out of poverty into fields of better opportunity, so here is my advice:

1. Go to the public library, borrow some books about sales, and study them.
2. Get a suit and a tie, even if they are second hand, so that you can go to interviews.
3. Forget about fixed-income jobs and look instead for a sales position.
4. Ignore those around you who criticize or ridicule your ambitions.
5. Watch the best-performing salesmen in your company and listen to their advice.
6. Keep on reading about sales and learn as much as you can about your industry.
7. Gain experience and become proficient in sales.
8. Move to a better sales job.
9. In the future, consider the possibility of starting your own company.

Taking the future in one’s own hands might require discarding unrealistic ideas held in the past. The fact is that some opportunities exist and others are hard to come by. Experience shows that sales work can be the way to a better life, a path that many have successfully walked before.

Many people view their jobs as life itself. Some people suffer from stress related ailments such as hypertension and some die due to various diseases such as heart failure. Yes, a job brings in the necessary income for us to sustain ourselves, to put a plate of food on the table. But do we really have to go through the pains and agony of diseases in order to survive? Many employees particularly in large corporations and government institutions still believe that the jobs they hold are “jobs for life.” They are oblivious of the current economic meltdown in spite of the signs written all over that the economies of the world are at a down turn. They bring unnecessary stress to their immediate supervisors.

The following are the signs to look for that will tell you whether your workforce is suffering from the entitlement mentality syndrome:

They are mostly under qualified

They are lazy and operate at their own pace and show no sense of urgency

They produce poor quality of work

They are wasteful in terms of using company resources

They play truant from their work stations for long periods without informing their supervisors

They pretend to be busy even after finishing the work they have been allocated

They are negative to management

They bad mouth and gossip about their colleagues and supervisors

They do not hesitate to rush to their unions at a slightest provocation

They will tell you about their rights

They will remind you about how long they have been employed by the company

They advocate for automatic promotion based on their years of service

They hate interviews and regard them as a waste of time

They are spiteful of external candidates

They arrive late at work and when reprimanded gets very angry

They are the last to arrive and the first to leave

They always take longer tea and lunch breaks

They always take sick leave and conveniently extend their weekends

These are employees who will not tell you about their contribution to the company or the company bottom line they increased and the projects they have initiated and successfully completed. They have no trust in themselves and they do not know and understand their strengths. They do not know the vision, goals and objectives of the company all what they care about is a pay cheque at the end of the month. These are the time wasters who visit other colleagues’ work stations to chat about weekend sports activities, it is during these discussions where innocent employees are recruited and turned against management. It is this group of people who complain the loudest when bonuses are paid based on performance results.

When you notice any of these signs from your employees, act fast and remove the employee or employees in question, who show any of these signs before they poison and contaminate your whole workforce.

Now, we all know that going to an interview is one of events in life that we all hate. Nobody queues up for the chance to sit down at a table with some people who are going to drill you with questions and try to make you slip up. To take your career to the next level, you need to meet the needs of the interview puzzle. There are three basic elements to a successful interview preparation strategy – Preparation, Presentation and Positive Thinking. Let’s start with the beginning: the introduction…

The start of the interview can come across as a really tricky number. You enter the interview room and suddenly you’re on your own. You have to remain vigilant and watch everything that you say and do. Even pronouncing your name correctly can appear to be a major challenge. Your hands go sweaty, your mouth is like sandpaper and you just want to go home. Just as you are about to turn on your heels and exit the room – the lead interview welcomes you in. Your career will turn on what you decide to do next!

Fear not. Introductions dont have to be embarrassing, distressing or tearful episodes. Introductions can be easy and fun. You simply have to approach things calmly and logically. Stop and think about it for a moment. Youre meeting someone for the first time; its a clean sheet, an opportunity for you to write your own ticket without preconceptions or bias getting in the way. All you have to do is arrive on time, dress smartly, check your teeth for remnants of your last meal, be yourself and make sure youre wearing industrial strength deodorant. What could be simpler? To build up confidence you can always practice introducing yourself in front of the bathroom mirror before you actually attend any interviews. You might want to try this in the comfort of your own home rather than in the washroom of your local pizzeria, where introducing yourself to fellow patrons might be frowned upon.

Having successfully navigated the interview introductions, your next big challenge is to deal with an offer of refreshments. Something as seemingly benign as a cup of tea or coffee can wreak havoc during an interview. Having to juggle hot liquids in flimsy plastic cups while convincing a stranger of your marketing expertise or business acumen should always be avoided. Accepting or declining refreshments is something of a judgement call, as you dont want to appear ill at ease, but remember the risks are high. Loud slurping or gulping wont endear you to the interviewer while spilling hot chocolate down the front of your cream and oatmeal business suit is a blunder few candidates can easily recover from. So, if you find fear and anxiety has made your mouth as dry as Death Valley on the hottest day of the year simply ask for a glass of water. Its probably your safest option.

It appears that after you have gone through the initial pleasantries, you have about 120 seconds to cement your initial impression in the minds of the interview panel. After they have formulated their initial view of you, they are unlikely to want to deter from the position of either wanting to hire or reject you. Stay calm. In your preparation, you will have determined what your key messages and sales points are. Stay targetted on delivering those messages confidently and clearly.

However doubtful you are, take it on trust that having your highly polished, recently manicured fingernails pulled out with rusty tweezers is far worse than your average job interview. Interviewers arent the monsters they might first appear. Theyre just ordinary people doing a difficult job. If the interviewer makes a poor decision then both you and your new employer will suffer the consequences. The best thing that you can probably do is place your trust in the interviewers experience while checking the chair youre offered for chains and thumbscrews. At the end of all this torment, after saying and doing everything right, you still might not get the job. Sometimes life is fickle. In such a case, try to get some positive feedback on your interview technique and move on.

You may well enter a phase in the interview, when you believe that you are in your stride and that things are going well. Unfortunately, if things are going well, then time will pass quickly and you will find yourself at the end of the interview in what appears to be a few minutes. Whatever happens remain focussed and don’t drop the ball now. Stay professional and polite right until you leave the building.

Finish your interview as well as you can. Keep your performance going until you leave the building. At the end, stand up and say thank you. Remember to smile and maintain eye contact. Walk carefully and surefootedly. Ensure that you know where the exit door is before you start to move – you don’t want to be trying to leave the room through the cupboard door. Well done.

Almost everyone feels some form of nervousness before attending an important interview, but with the right mindset and proper preparation you can turn this negative emotion into a positive one. It is expected by the interviewer that you do express some form of interest to work for the organization by having some basic information firmly etched in your mind. It is always wise to be prepared for anything that might come up during the interview. Even luck favors those who are prepared.

Surf the company’s website and learn all you can about the organization, starting with its history, the products and services it offer. To be a part of an organization, it helps if you learn about its culture, the goals and mission and how it is formed. There is a lot you can learn by becoming a good listener so simply by listening to the questions they ask, you can very well detect the type of person they are looking for. Make sure you’re alert to what they are looking for, not every organization needs a champion, most would prefer effective members who can become good team players.

If you are applying for a sales position, then some role playing is expected, which you can easily fulfill if you have learned about the company’s products and services. For every action you take to research the company, you will be presented with some unexpected opportunities to display your knowledge, and it will undoubtedly impress the interviewers. You can make an effort to ask questions about the position you are applying for, this generally is regarded as showing interest, which will be considered as a positive trait. Rather then being offensive, it actually lets the interviewer see the seriousness you have for the job and the desire to be a part of the organization.

You can practice going for the interview with a good friend. Visualize being interviewed and practice the role until you feel comfortable. Prepare yourself answering those questions that are typical in job interviews. It is expected that the interviewers will ask for previous work experience which shows you as having the trait they are looking for. Often this will determine whether you will break or make the interview.
