State-of-the-art Job Search Strategies

Online Recruitment. State-of-the-art Job Search Strategies

HISTORY OF JOB SEARCH

Online recruitment started almost the same time in the USA and in England in the early 90′s with providers like Monster.com in the USA, Jobserve.com in the UK and Allstarjobs.ca (started in 1997). A job bank at that time merely had a few thousand of open job positions and the chance of putting employers in touch with jobseekers was quite remote.

Since those early days, we have seen an explosion of job search sites and the technology has improved a lot for the benefit of both, recruiters and jobseekers. Nowadays, typing “Job Search” in search fields of Google or Yahoo, you get millions of pages dealing with this subject.

Now we have a new problem: how not to get lost in this jungle of ultimate Career and Job Search Services (of which many require an inscription fee). What do we really want? Using the Internet in first place has the advantage of speed and the possibility to look in any geographical area for the required job that the candidate is qualified for, or aspires to. With the Internet installed at home, it is possible to investigate the potential employers, ask questions and apply for the position, without even taking off your pajamas.

How do we explain the recent evolution in online recruitment technology? Even if you feel relatively satisfied with the current search offerings of top job search engines like Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com or Hotjobs.com, there are still many doors open for improvements and a lot of research is going on in the field of vertical engines, meaning-based search, intent-driven search, new clustering methods, and much more.

ALL-IN-ONE JOB SEARCH ENGINES

A recent trend in job search engines is the emergence of all-in-one or metasearch engines (sometimes also referred as vertical job search engines), allowing jobseekers to search across multiple websites. Among the most popular engines are Indeed (in the USA), Wowjobs (in Canada) and Trovit (in the UK).

Probably the most powerful of all is Indeed, which was founded by Paul Forster and his partner Rony Kahan in the year 2004 to cover the US job market. According to Hitwise data, Indeed saw its market share increase by 302% in the year 2006 and this only seems to be the beginning. The success of Indeed and other metasearch or all-in-one search engines is the fact that job seekers can go to one place to find all jobs, overcoming the limitation of the job boards, which have a finite number of listings. A simple comparison of mayor job search engines reveals that there is no need any more to look in all the individual engines to find the best fits for the job you are looking for. There are more job sites than you can count, ranging from the top job sites like Monster and CareerBuilder to small, niche sites in just about every career field you can imagine. Indeed is searching in more than 1200 engines at a time and brings you the result in seconds on your screen. With a couple of clicks of your mouse, you search the major job sites, company sites, associations, and other online job sites by keyword and location to get job listings that match the criteria you selected. With it’s high-tech search

strategy, Indeed clearly leaves behind other so-called meta-job search engines like Jobster and SimpyHired. With Wowjobs and Trovit, metasearch engines focused on the Canadian and UK job market, and respectively the situation is very similar.

POSTING YOUR RESUME IN RECRUITMENT SERVICES

A developing trend with both jobs search engines and jobs boards is that many now encourage users to post their resume or CV together with contact details. The fact is, it`s proven that posting your resume in a proactive way in the mayor resume distribution systems will put it on the desk of hundreds of recruiters and can more than double the chance of getting a job!

The advantages of Resume Posting are:

- You more than double your chance of getting “discovered” by a recruiter who

is looking for a person with exactly your experience and abilities.

– You put your resume in the hands of hundreds of recruiters, almost instantly!

– You are sending your resume only to recruiters focusing on your specific

industry or job categories.

– You save a lot of time and money and you get an instant edge – with only

little effort from your part!

– Your resume is passing a pre-selection system and when it comes on the desk of hiring managers they will read it very carefully.

Resume posting has become an attractive business for the recruitment companies as they sell the access to their resume bank to headhunters and recruiting managers. Anyhow, jobseekers should be aware of the risks of uploading personal information to the Internet since they have no control over what will happen with their data and their resume might be seen by their current employer or even by “identity thefts”.

TAKE A BREATH AND SLOW DOWN

The question is still if all the improvements in search technology also improved the overall performance of recruitment efforts. Finding a job still is hard work. It is very helpful to slow down, take time, and analyze if you are happy with your current situation and what career is really right for you. In our modern world, the best job success is earning good money with work that gives you a sense of purpose, expresses your talents and passions, and is consistent with your values. A lack of many Job Search Sites is that they do not assist the jobseekers in finding their best career fit and even confusing people in trying to evaluate their current situation. Job searching is a short-term pursuit of a position that matches your financial and career goals. Career planning is a long, progressive process of choosing education, training, and jobs that fit your interests and skills. This planning process also includes the evaluation of career change or self-employment opportunities. Deciding what type of work you want to pursue requires knowledge and understanding of your interests, your values, your motivation, and the skills you enjoy using the most. This is helpful whether you are choosing a career for the first time or changing careers for the twenty-first time. The Two-Approach Guide for Effective and Easy Job Search is intended to guide jobseekers through this process instead of simply offering hundreds of links without explanation and leading to confusion. One aspect that even the most powerful Job Search engine cannot cover is the fact that probably the majority of job vacancies are never posted in journals, newspapers or on-line and you only find them using the right contacts or your Network.

This “hidden job market” only can be exploited by keeping focus on people who have experiences, and contacts that might be interesting for you.

Good possibilities to build up your Network, are for example job fairs or similar events where you meet hiring managers, job lead sources and other

valuable contacts.

CONCLUSIONS

Using state-of-the art job search engines, online recruitment has become a powerful tool for a fast, efficient and economical job search and the performance is improving constantly. But every jobseeker should be aware of the fact that even

the most powerful job search engine should be considered only as a single tool in the Job Search Strategy and that still most jobs are found using personal Networks. Finding a job is all about people, the people you know, and people you meet who have the job information and who will inevitably help you get a job.

Online Job Search using all-in-one or metasearch engines definitely makes life much easier but should not be overestimated.

Do you feel you are underpaid? Do you think your company is benefiting from you much more than what it is paying in return? Do you think that your efforts at the job are unrewarded? Do you think you truly deserve a salary raise? If the answer to all these questions is ‘Yes’, all you need to do is ask. However, this might be the most difficult asking that you might have to do in your life (other than proposing to someone to get married to you). You need to do a lot of preparation before you can ask your employer or your boss for a salary hike. There would be a natural resistance from your boss to give you the raise because that means shelling out more for getting the same services from you that he is already enjoying at a lower salary. Therefore, you need to present your case in a manner that your boss is also convinced that you deserve the raise that you have asked for.

Here are a few tips that would help you successfully negotiate a pay hike with your employer.

Fix a meeting with your reporting manager

Just ask your boss or reporting manager for some time to review your work and performance. Do not say that the purpose of the meeting is salary hike. Your meeting request might just get rejected if you ask this. And even if the boss agrees, he/she would be well-prepared to turn down your request of a salary raise. Thus, just seek an appointment to discuss your work and go prepared. This would be the most critical meeting as your salary hike would depend on how well you are prepared to sell your argument.

Go for the meeting fully prepared

Since it is a critical meeting, you wouldn’t want to go for it unprepared. Don’t just go for it on an ad-hoc basis and take it as it comes. Before going for the meeting, prepare a list of all possible questions, all tentative answers and all the arguments that you are going to put across. Also, have knowledge of the average salaries in your role for your experience. If you have friends in the industry working in similar positions, talk to them to gather real information. Otherwise, there are many salary tools available online that help you get a fair idea of what your salary should be. Prepare notes of all these things and take print-outs, if required. This way, you will have a strong case to ask for the raise that you want.

Deserve what you desire

No boss is going to give you a raise just because you want it. So, it’s time for some introspection. Ask yourself a few questions from the perspective of your boss. Analyze your achievements, what they mean for the company that you are working with, your competencies, the amount of workload on you, your level of commitment towards the job and more such questions. Are you better than other members of the team? Do you have that willingness to put in extra? If you are asking for a salary hike, you must truly deserve it in your own eyes and from the perspective of the boss too. The best time to ask for a salary raise would be when you have shown consistently good performance over a remarkable period of time. This will give you enough number of reasons to justify the hike that you are asking for.

Sell yourself well

The meeting would be nothing like selling your competencies and convincing the boss to buy in your strengths. Be ready with all the evidences to demonstrate that you are worth the hike you are asking for. Translate your work into numbers, if possible. This means try to gauge the impact of your work on the revenue that the company generated and present it in that way. Talk about the increased revenue and how your contribution was critical to it. Go with a well prepared document or presentation that you refer to at all points so that you don’t forget anything.

What if your boss doesn’t budge?

Go prepared with the possibility that your request might get rejected. What then? Your boss may refuse to give you a salary hike for some genuine reasons too. There might be a company policy for that year or there might be an economic slowdown. How do you go about it then? Be ready with a back-up plan and ask for non-monetary benefits to reward your performance. Ask for a promotion on the same salary or an assurance of a hike within a given time. You could also ask for upgrading your skills by some training.

So, these are some tips that might help you get a salary hike even in a difficult economy. Ultimately, what you get would depend solely on your capability and your ability to convince your boss.

Executive search consultants have interesting but challenging jobs. At times, finding the right candidate for a company can be a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack. A fairly big gap can exist between the company needs and the candidates wants and the consultant’s job of helping the two sides meet in the middle can be daunting.

A way to make the process much easier is to find highly qualified candidates with a vision and work style that matches the hiring company. In the past, that meant job fairs, newspaper ads, and a great deal of faxing in an effort to find qualified applicants.

But with the advent of email, the internet, twitter and text messaging, finding candidates is becoming easier, allowing executive search consultants to find better qualified applicants faster. Rather than attend job fairs all over the country hoping to find top notch applicants and then being done with a search, a recruiter can launch a well designed website that allows people to add their resume online. With a 24 hour 7 day a week presence on the internet, a number of possible employees have access to the recruiter that might never have made it to a job fair.

Another technology that has made a world of difference for recruiters is email. No longer limited by fax machines, candidates can communicate clearly without having to run to Kinko’s to fax documents. Email is also a great tool for tracking information, allowing the recruiter to know what details were sent and when. Negotiations are well documented and an email conversation can happen quickly and easily, allowing decisions to be discussed thoroughly even within the time pressure of a job search.

Texting is another useful tool for consultants. Being able to sit in an office meeting and at the same time send a short bit of information to a candidate regarding a change of an interview location makes all the difference. Twitter is also finding its way into the awareness of executive search consultants as it allows them to distribute information to all their clients and candidates with a minimum of effort.

Technology has sped up the recruitment process but it’s also improved the results. It’s easier than ever to find the right candidate for a job and make the hiring company as well as the new employee thrilled with the perfect match.

These are tough times for job market and the global economic slowdown is eating up thousands of jobs each week leaving many jobless. Some industries like IT, manufacturing, real estate, financial services etc have been specially hit. Companies are cutting jobs and reorganizing their workforce to control costs. Those companies that are not laying off have either frozen new inductions or pay hikes. Hence, there is very less new job creation in most of the industries that goes for both – jobs in India and abroad. This is an especially tough time for freshers looking for jobs. However, it is not like there are no new jobs up for grabs. Companies are hiring on need basis though they may not be advertising job vacancies to cut costs.

So, how does one land a job during recession? Many employees are staying put at their jobs, no matter how bad or unsatisfactory it is. While some other smart jobseekers are exploring smart job search ways to get job offers even in this tough time. Job search has become tougher than ever right now but it is not impossible to find a job. For those who have been laid off, or those who are fresh out of college and looking for a job, there is still glimmer of hope. Jobs are not as easy to come by but that does not mean that there are no jobs at all. Now, more than ever, there is more competition per job so it will pay to be smarter in job search.

Firstly, keep disappointment at bay. You are not the only one out there on whom bad times have befallen. There are thousands there with similar fate. Young jobseekers too need not get too cynical about the job market. Negative thoughts are natural but they will only end up harming you. So, keep giving yourself motivation and encouragement that this is just a temporary phase. It will surely pass. All you need to do is keep your confidence and positivism intact. It is these things that will help you sail through. Don’t let insecurity bog you down.

If you are out of job currently, your first aim should be getting a job and keep getting a steady pay Cheque. You must explore new sectors and jobs. This just might be the turning point in your career. Be open in your attitude and try to get any decent job. Remember, it would any day be better than sitting idle. Do something that interests you or look at pursuing any of your hobbies as a career. It will only add value to your resume and help you market yourself better when the job market opens up. And when you get an interview call, prepare well for it in advance. There would definitely be fierce competition so you have to make sure that you convert an interview call into a job offer.

If you are currently working but your company has started pruning its workforce, may be it’s time for you to rethink your career strategy. You never know when the axe will fall on you too. Firstly, start doing adequate savings. There is nothing better than a monetary cushion when you are out of work. It will give you the required time and confidence to look for a new job. Don’t waste money and ask your family to save too. Network more than ever and be mindful of job opportunities in any company. Basically, don’t be caught unaware and unprepared if you are laid off. Planning your career this way will help you in long run and make your job search easier too.

Call centers are nothing less than a revolution in India. The young brigade of India, fresh out of college and raring to go has got a fabulous opportunity to begin career at a call center. Some students join it merely to start earning some pocket money. There are numerous call center jobs for fresh graduates and even experienced professionals. These call centers could either be of international companies or even of domestic companies. Nearly a decade ago, the culture of call centers invaded the Indian scene and has completely changed the way youngsters look at jobs now.

Call centers are of two types: Inbound and Outbound. The inbound customers are those that handle customer queries and take calls. Many international companies have based their call centers for customer services in India. These are voice-based services. Selected candidates for these call center jobs are given voice modulation training, thorough knowledge of the product and also a sense of the culture of the area of whose customers they are dealing with. In these call centers, 24×7 calls are received from customers who are looking for any sort of information or want to lodge a complaint or place an order or anything that they want to say.

The outbound call centers are those that make calls to people. Generally, these are sales calls aimed at generating leads and getting in more business. The employees at outbound call centers are required to understand their products and services well and pitch them to the customers. Again, these are voice-based services where the employees are required to make calls. Extensive training is imparted to these call center workers to be able to drive better sales by understanding the needs of the customer well.

Jobs at call centers are advertised through newspapers, job sites and on company sites. The best part about call center jobs is that they readily hire fresh graduates. These graduates are trained under the supervision of trainers and seniors. The call centers offer high starting salaries and are the compensation paid is the main attraction for those working here. Call centers also offer many motivational activities to their employees. All this is done to retain talent as attrition rate is quite high in this industry. Students do not consider call centers as long-term careers but there are many who have stayed on with this industry to carve out long-term careers. They acquire managerial posts and start leading teams after three-four years of experience.

A typical call center is like a service center that has appropriate telecom facilities and access to Internet. Call centers provide both web-based and voice based information and support to domestic or international customers. Call centers provide a huge spectrum of services and are useful in all industries such as banking, credit collections, hotel/airline reservations manufacturing, customer service, order desk, catalogue sales, security, pharmaceuticals, utilities, market research, technical queries, food service, etc.

This career is best suited to freshers looking to start their career or retired professionals or even housewives. The field gives good growth opportunities to those working in here. Professionals from the tech field, HR, marketing can find good job opportunities at call centers. Though there are no particular educational qualifications required to join a call center, generally, graduates with good command over the language are preferred. For call centers servicing clients in eth western world, candidates must possess a good command over the English language. They should also have excellent communication skills, basic knowledge of computers, sharp presence of mind, ability to talk confidently in unfamiliar situations and patience. Sometimes, there are difficult customers to handle on phone and a call center executive must retain his cool temperament to deal with such situations.

There are irregular shifts in call centers. Call centers that service clients in the US have main workload at night so there are mandatory night shifts. However, there are many perks that come with call center jobs. Most call centers provide free meals and transport facilities to their employees. There are also other incentives and career growth opportunities that call centers promise to their executives. Thus, there are both negative and positive points of working in a call center. There are call centers located across the country but Gurgaon, Noida, Hyderabad and Bangalore have become the hub of call

Centers in India.

Are you a fresher just passed out of university or university and looking jobs for freshers, it is a heavy time for your to land up in your first job. As the world economies is in down turn across the world, firms around the globe cut cost and as part of cost control cutting jobs, hold income increments and perks.

Many companies stop the hiring process or there’s each small hiring. As there is very few opening for freshers, only few colleges across the nation may be able to place their scholars in jobs where as most of the university across the nation fail to draw in corporations to their campuses. Companies that already visited schools campuses in past decline to visit schools to sign up freshers citing the economy melting and company policy to not recruit freshers or company policy to hold on recruitment of freshers for jobs.

Freshers who already given offer letters by companies in campus hiring are waiting to get call from corporations to join for months. So in this market scenario, freshers need new approach towards jobs for freshers. And there’s need for change in their big dream about beginning their career with important people in the company world and with hand full of salary.

When you search jobs for freshers, do not look in to income look in to the job role offered to you and career the job fetches you in the near future. Many freshers have the attitude of comparing their income package with the income packages offered to the university seniors in the campus hiring as well as in the campus. Don’t do such comparison as those times are different from current economy situation.

In this current job marketplace situation you want a different approach towards jobs for freshers and your expectancy toward your first job. As there’s less jobs for freshers in massive corporations which often use to hire fair number of freshers, the freshers have to look in to other avenue like tiny firms, start up and other new layer who offer you fresher job which challenging job roles and various job responsibility to start your career and eventually the experience that you gained in that job will help to get a dream job in the future.

There is no doubt that LinkedIn is widely used in the business community as a type of “online resume.” Anyone that has conducted a successful LinkedIn job search can tell you, it’s so much more than that. It’s a powerful tool to reach out to your industry in a new and credible way. Follow these steps and you’ll be one step closer to making strong connections to employers and industry recruiters on LinkedIn.

Step 1
Complete Your Profile
Your profile is like your online resume, only better, because people can endorse your work right on your profile. If you haven’t fully completed your profile, you aren’t giving anyone enough information to determine if you are a person they would want to share networks with. You are asking for people to open their rolodex to you, so to speak. You must have a complete profile that shows them you are worthy networking partner.

Profile description with personality – this is the place where you need to sell yourself. Think “cover letter meets 30 second elevator pitch.”

List all positions – Listing all your past positions allows the system to find more people who you may already know or who have a workplace or school in common. LinkedIn suggests people to network with based on information in your profile.

Education – For the same reason, list all the schools you attended. It may seem silly to list your high school in a resume, but LinkedIn is different. Since it uses this information to help bring people together, it’s important to include everything. You never know where your fellow classmates ended up that may help your career.

Recommendations – Endorsements are always important. LinkedIn is no exception. Ask people from each sector of your worklife to endorse the work you did when they knew you. Make sure you get clients, bosses, employees, vendors, etc.

Link to Website – You can provide up to 3 websites that relate to your work, either an online resume or your website if you have one, or one that you worked on.

SEO your profile – Always think “keywords, keywords, keywords” in everything you do online. Make sure you that are using the same words when you write your profile that someone would use to search for someone like you.

LinkedIn Applications - Utilize the applications that are relevant, integrating blogs, presentations, etc.

Step 2
Reach Out – Build Your Network
When you make a first level connection with someone, it means you know them directly. When you connect with someone, you gain a broader reach than just that person because all of the people that they know are now part of your network as 2nd level connections. Similarly, all of the second level’s connections now become your third level connections. What all this means is that you can exponentially grow your network by making smart connections to people you already know or strategic people in your industry.

Building your network is helpful if you want to ask an industry question to your connections. Your entire network is posed the question, so the more people you are connected to the more brains you are reaching. When you get ready to search jobs, the broader your network is, the greater your access to jobs posted by your network.

Connect to people you already know – Import your address book to see who you know that is already on LinkedIn. Reach out to colleagues, friends, classmates, vendors, etc.

Strategic new connections – See who your connections know. Do you also know them? Should you know them? If so, invite them to connect with a personal message of why it would be beneficial for them to share networks with you.

Step 3
Build Credibility
http://www.linkedin.com/answers

LinkedIn’s Answers section is a great way to build your industry credibility in your online community. If you have strategically connected with people in your industry, they will see your posed questions, or see that you have answered questions and come to realize that you are someone who has something meaningful to contribute. This can help you in a job search, or for general industry networking.

Step 4
Research
Once your profile has been built and you have begun your quest for online industry credibility, you are ready to start searching for positions posted by people in your network.

Search Jobs
http://www.linkedin.com/jobs
LinkedIn Jobs has openings posted by people in your network. You can search LinkedIn only or you can search throughout the web for any jobs posted online that fit your search criteria.

JobsInsider tool
This LinkedIn tool allows you to see who you know at any company who has listed open jobs, request an introduction to the hiring manager and see open job postings at Monster, CareerBuilder, HotJobs, Craigslist, SimplyHired, Dice, or Vault. The link to download the tool is located at the bottom of each LinkedIn page:
http://www.linkedin.com/static?key=jobsinsider_download&trk=hb_ft_jobsins

Companies Section
This section of LinkedIn contains information about various companies whose employees are on LinkedIn. It will show you who is in your network at that company, who has recently been hired or promoted there and will list their open positions. It also shows you where people who work there used to work, and where they went after they worked there. Knowing what’s up at a company is important for networking your way in.

Step 5
Request Introductions
When you are ready, you can request an introduction to someone in a company that either has an opening, or one that you wish you target. Professionally request the introduction, letting them know why it would benefit the receiver to know you, so the referrer feels confident in making the introduction. Make sure you have something to contribute. If it’s all about you, there is a chance your request will be ignored. Once the introduction has been made, be sure to thank the referrer. Make contact with the person and show them why connecting with you is a great career move for you both.

Get Started!
Now you are well on your way to a successful job search via LinkedIn. Be sure to commit time and effort to growing and maintaining your network. Help put others in touch so they will help you in return. Networking has always been a strong career development practice. It hasn’t changed, we just have more tools available to help make it easier. But just because it’s easier, doesn’t make it any less important. Now get out there and network!

The way companies recruit for talent has changed dramatically over the years. No one particular channel able to satisfy a company’s talent needs. The advent of online job boards, social networking sites and job referral programs have helped to alleviate the talent crunch but companies continue to look for alternative cost-effective recruitment channels.

In this article, we explore two channels for talent recruitment – social network recruiting, which is a more recent phenomenon, and its less sexier cousin, internal job referral programs. These to methods are now being combined to open up an alternative channel for talent acquisition, the ‘external’ referral program.

Social Network Recruiting in the era of Facebook and LinkedIn

The internet has helped to transform the way companies recruit by providing additional channels through which recruiters can find candidates for their jobs. LinkedIn (23M members), Facebook (120M+), MySpace (200M+) are just a sample of the large social networking sites that have opened up their databases to recruiters and job ads.

These social networks are a boon to headhunters and recruiters who are able to tap these databases to source for candidates globally. Some recruiters have had success in connecting with qualified candidates as well as getting referrals for their search. This channel also touches the elusive ‘passive’ candidate who is typically more prized than the active job seeker. However, these sites do have their downsides. Many members don’t keep their profile up to date and recruiters have to pay a subscription fee upfront to access these candidate databases with no guarantee of return and invest in the internal recruitment team to conduct such searches.

Internal Referral Programs – Social Networking the old fashioned way

Internal referral programs are the old-style cousins of the Web2.0 social network recruiting. These programs are one of the most successful ways that companies are able to attract talent. How do these programs work? Companies offer up to thousands of dollars for employees to refer their friends to open positions and employees will receive the rewards if their referral is ultimately hired.

The success rate for a well-designed employee referral program can be as high as 30% of all new external hires by a particular company. Banks, consultancies, and technology companies are some of the biggest users of internal referral programs. Referral programs work because employees are able to filter the candidates to ensure that they fit the position and the company’s culture. Employees also want to protect their reputation at the firm by not referring unqualified candidates. Since rewards are only paid out if a candidate is successful, there is a guaranteed Return on Investment (ROI) on such programs.

Combining referrals with social networking - The ‘external’ referral program

A few companies have sought to combine these two programs by opening up their internal referral programs externally and allowing referrals from non-employees. These new Internet companies include Zubka, Xpertize, JobTonic in Europe and YelloJobs in India and Vawch in Singapore. In this new paradigm, companies can leverage on the social networks of individuals to source for candidates by offering them incentives to refer qualified people in their social networks to the position. These programs are also inherently global as a professional’s network is not restricted to where the individual lives but where he went to school, worked and visit.

An example would probably illustrate this best. For a recent posting at Vawch for an investment banking job in Singapore, we obtained referrals from our professional network from India, New York and Singapore who then applied for the job and are qualified.

This channel also promises a higher quality of candidate due to the referral mechanism and is also typically success-based. If there is match it is a win-win for everyone, the employer finds the right candidate, the referrer gets rewarded and the candidate gets a new job. Although this new form of recruiting has only started to gain traction, we believe that this will be a good addition to the existing channels and it’s a no-risk proposition for the recruiter!

Sales Manager at www.vawch.com. Vawch is an online job referral marketplace targeting premium jobs, where professionals can refer other professionals to jobs and earn thousands in rewards if a successful placement is made. Based in Singapore, vawch targets the Singapore/HK/Australia and Southeast Asia market and referrals for jobs paying more than US$60Kper year.

The scope of opportunities being offered in is unlimited, all that you require is the appropriate qualifications Hotel jobs are those jobs involved with the Hospitality industry. The word hospitality covers hotels, restaurants, industrial or organized catering for offices, hospitals, educational institutions, private homes, defense services, railways, cruise ships and flight catering. Though the word hospitality itself conjures images of throwing good parties, gracious entertaining hosts, food and drink, hospitality used to be and still is a serious duty and responsibility. The service offered by hospitality institutions such as hotels is moral obligation by the owners of the place to provide the best possible care to its customers.

Thus those in hotel jobs have to understand and appreciate the relationship between guest and host and that the actions and decisions originating from either the guest or host have consequences for both agents. Categories of hotel jobs are : Chefs & Cooks (All Cuisines) Restaurant Managers Captains & Stewards Banquets Housekeeping Sales & Marketing Front Office Guest relations General Managers Heads of Departments Finance & Accounts Travel Related services Hostesses Maintenance & Engineering Event Managers.

The demand for Indian hotel managers and staff in the international industry is very high. This is particularly so in the Middle East, in cities like Dubai. One reason is that there is acute shortage of locally trained manpower. And there are hardly any institutions offering professional training, in these countries. The shortage of skilled and experienced professionals is also being felt in developed countries in Europe (including the UK), the USA, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong etc. Their preference is for Indian managers because of their high educational level, quality of education standards followed by Hospitality Management Schools of India and the valuable experience they gain by working in India and serving nationals of every country. Official surveys estimate that International employers recruit about 20% of Indian management graduates every year.

Recent years have seen a growing trend towards hiring Indian managers internationally in large numbers in other service sectors like banks, airlines, multiplexes, shopping malls, cruise ships etc. A fairly large number of International companies are now coming to Indian management institutions offering placements for newly trained graduates, in a routine manner.

Apart from the new graduates, there is also a high demand for those who have experience working in hotels and restaurants, particularly in areas dealing with customers, like front office. In appreciation of their skill in handling customers of all hues a number of hospitality managers with good records have been welcomed into other service sectors such as banking, airlines, call centers etc. this throws up an more increasing number of job opportunities for hospitality professionals.

Selling yourself on paper is a tough job. Gone are the days when a simple resume with no grammatical or spelling error used to work. While writing resume remember that there is no extra credit given for correct spelling, grammar or punctuation today. A simple mistake can take your resume to the waste paper basket. Proofreading and double-checking the final copy is very important. Edit your work twice. Make sure that the recruitment manager or HR of a company is not the first one to go through the finished product. Have someone else read it first.

Most of the people have a misconception about the purpose of a resume. The purpose of a resume is not to get you a job but to give the employers enough idea about you so that they call you for the interview. Writing a resume is an initial step to be taken before preparing for a job interview. Use the tests, interview, HR round etc to get the job. Another important thing to remember is that a single page resume is twice as effective as two or three page resume. People with 10 years of experience limit their resume to one-page because the employer will not spend more than 30 seconds to go through a resume.

While writing a resume people often get confused as to what they should write after their name, address, phone number and email-id. Well, opening with your career objective is a good idea. But you can omit this section if it is not relevant. Depending on the requirement you can put either education or experience next to your career objective.

Employers prefer resume that are not limited to job titles. Go beyond it and describe your jobs. For example if you were a reporter don’t just say that. Mention the areas or any special event or interview that you covered. Highlight the accomplishments you had in your job. Say whether you have achieved any award for your job. This will distinguish your resume from others.

Be professional. Don’t use cartoons or flashy things because gimmicks will only highlight lack of sophistication, professionalism and experience. You can use bold fonts wherever needed. But making the whole resume bold is probably not a good idea. Using clean and simple design can give you advantage over other applicants.

If you are not sure what else to include other than your whereabouts, education and experience you can go by these suggestions. Second and third languages (if you know any) must be included in your resume. Extracurricular activities, awards, scholarships, personal achievements are also important to include in your resume.

Always inform the person whom you want to mention as a reference and check whether it is ok with him or her. List a person as a reference only if he/she can give you a good word. If the employer call up a reference and hear something negative or irritating your chance is going to stop then and there.

With an effective resume it will not be difficult for you to find a job.

Are you looking for advice in your career planning? Are you wondering where you can find good advice to help you make something out of your life? There are a lot of good websites to help you to take your career planning advice seriously. It is important that when you are a job seeker that you look for some expert advice for planning your career.

In college, you are taught how to be prepared for the real world, but then when you graduate you end up feeling completely lost. Your future success in life depends on how well you plan your career from the very beginning, and on how well you equip yourself to deal with the learning curve needed for success in the workplace and in navigating your way around office politics for instance.

As for some of the advice that you are going to hear, you are going to find that everyone is going to tell you that you need to make sure that your personality and your dream goals match. You can also take some online tests to help you to make sure that your aptitude and expectations will match any career you are considering at the moment. You will be able to research a solid path for your future.

With the results from your personality and career tests you will be able to find something that could make you feel good about yourself and pull your life around. Many personnel and recruitment agencies have job applicants complete such tests, so it is helpful if you already have some experience in completing these tests and can be less stressed in such a test environment. This will help you to shine in a job interview situation.

The second piece of advice that everyone is going to tell you is the fact that you are going to have to do a lot of research and work to find the career that will make you happy. You are going to have to make lists and look up each and every career that holds some interest for you. You are going to have to make sure that the career that you pick will make you happy, and if you do your proper research, you should be able to find a career that is fulfilling. You will also want to do a lot of hands on experience for you to get a real clue as to what you can do with your life. You can also seek out the assistance of a career development counselor through your college or job agency.

The last piece of advice is that you will want to follow your heart. This means that if you don’t feel like going into some field, then don’t! You don’t want to waste your time, as you may end up in a dead end job for the rest of your life. You will find that if you follow your heart and some career decisions for the very beginning then you will end up being successful when it comes to designing a career for yourself.

I have found a site created by Helene Malmsio who has had 20 years of employment recruitment and staff training experience. On this site there are hundreds of resources to help you plan your career, including a no-obligation report download and eCourse you can also subscribe to, that can be used by anyone wanting some expert help in trying to develop their career further. It also has HR management articles for new executives just learning about their staff recruiting and management processes along with staff career planning pathways.

It is very important that you do that what it takes to make something of yourself, because there is a lot of people who work all their lives, but waste every opportunity put their way to develop their careers further. Those people are never happy because they are never able to achieve success that is the bets piece of advice that you can ever get for career planning.

Make sure you get your hands on all the information you can use to be in control of your future work pathways and opportunities in your lifetime career path.

As we face a difficult economy it becomes increasingly important to think wisely and not get emotional about sourcing job candidates. With smart decisions you can actually move ahead of your competition if that is in another company or within your own company with competing recruiters.

Probably one of the best things you can do is take the time to put in a 80/20 rule for your employees if you are a manager. Keep on the top 20% of your most productive recruiters and extend their contracts to show faith during challenging times. Then you will need to look to trim the excess with the bottom 10% and look to even take more out if necessary.

The middle 70% you need to be very careful with because each situation is going to have to be taken care of on an individual basis to find out exactly what works and will not during this recession. Often effort can go unnoticed so it becomes important to carefully view what each person does with their time during and outside of work.

If you are not making managerial decisions then you need to make personal decisions with your time and analyze what is working well and what is not working well. Look to cut out all the areas that are inconsistent and producing little results and demanding a great deal of your time.

Look to train and make improvements daily in your strategies and look for ways to do so after hours when you are not working. It is best to be smart with your efforts and implement methods and test them during the day and re-evaluate daily what is working well and what isn’t. You can be amazed what you can change with a few tweaks here and there.

Start planning your hiring needs by the quarter for all of your important job positions that you have to fill. Get your line managers to update their quarterly plans and have them perform tracking just as often to realize what is working well. You have to be very smart with the time you have because this is a great open window to make improvements.

The most important thing is that you need to find time to use online advertising tools like Entice Labs and Jobs2Web to attract your ideal customers. The more you do this the better chance you will have of finding the ideal candidates and decrease your cost per hire in a difficult marketing period.

It can be tough to find success in a down economy, but you have to do it and continue to look for ways to improve. The better you are with your methods the quicker you will pull out of the recession and pass your competition.
